Notes: Abstract Generalized fin-lines are analyzed which consist of slots located on more than one interface between dielectric layers inserted in parallel with the E-plane of a waveguide. The analysis is based on a simplified formulation technique based on the spectral domain immittance matrix followed by a Galerkin's method. It allows as many slots as one desires at each interface, and the locations and the widths of these slots are arbitrary. The numerical process to carry out the present analysis is rather efficient. Some numerical data, including propagation constants of the propagating modes as well as characteristic impedances are presented for several structures considered useful for millimeter-wave circuit applications.

Notes: Abstract Dried suspensions ofPenicillium roqueforti Thom, Coliphage T-1,Bacillus subtilis and tobacco mosaic virus were exposed to space on board the Gemini-IX-A and XII earth satellites and the Agena-VIII space rocket. All micro-organisms tested survived the direct exposure during the Gemini-IX-A experiment. In the Gemini-XII experiment only the T-1 phage survived the direct exposure. The survival was influenced by the suspending medium and depended on the species of the microorganism. After four months of space flight on the Agena-VIII space rocket surviving fractions between 2×10−3 and 1.0 were found in the unopened flight container. However, micro-organisms exposed on the cover of the container during this period were completely inactivated. Shielding against solar ultraviolet radiation during flight resulted in survival of micro-organisms exceeding to that of the transport controls, and the survival was considered complete. Sterile methylcellulose collection surfaces were exposed to space on board the Gemini-IX-A and XII satellites in an attempt to collect viable micro-organisms in space. None of the collection surfaces yielded viable micro-organisms.

Notes: Abstract Survival of coliphageT 1, tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and spores ofPenicillium roqueforti Thom after direct exposure to space on board 6 balloons, 6 sounding rockets and 3 satellites is related to the numbers of solar UV photons incident during exposure. The survival followed exponential curves leading to complete inactivation. Solar ultraviolet radiation of wavelengths 2000 Å to 3000 Å appears to be the main cause of inactivation of broth suspended phage and, probably, TMV.T 1 phage andPenicillium spores prepared in saline were also affected by radiation shorter than 2000 Å, while TMV seems to be resistant to radiation of these wavelengths. The biological effectiveness of the solar spectrum in the area between 3000 Å to 50 000 Å was not significant. Sterilization of interplanetary spacecraft appears necessary since micro-organisms can easily be shielded against lethal radiation.

Description / Table of Contents: Organic Peroxides, XI. Preparation and Thermolysis of tert-Butyl Cycloalkane- and 1-Methylcycloalkane-percarboxylatesCycloalkane- and 1-methylcycloalkanepercarboxylates with 3-12 ring carbon atoms were prepared from the corresponding carboxylic acids. The pKMCS*-values of these acids were determined and are briefly discussed. The kinetics and the products of the thermolyses of the peresters were investigated and are interpreted by the homolytic fragmentation mechanism. From the influence of the ring size on the rates of thermolyses it is concluded that in the transition state of these unsymmetrical homolytic fragmentation reactions the Cα—CO bonds are relatively little stretched. 18O-labelling experiments exclude a fast and reversible cleavage of the peroxide bonds with consecutive slow decarboxylation as a mechanistic alternative. The influence of the ring size on the rate of formation of cycloalkyl free radicals is a general criterion for investigating the geometry of the transition states of these reactions.

Notes: L-Malic acid (2) reacts with trifluoroacetic anhydride under anhydrous conditions to give (S)-trifluoroacetoxy-succinic acid anhydride (3). The anhydride 3 undergoes regioselective ring opening with an excess of anilines or primary aliphatic amines leading to N-substituted-(S)-3-hydroxy-succinamic acids (4a-g). Structural elucidation of the reaction products 4a-g was based on analytical and spectroscopic data and on an X-ray structure analysis of 4b. Secondary aliphatic amines react with 3 by condensation and subsequent elimination to furnish N,N′-disubstituted fumaric acid amides 5a, b. Some N-substituted-2-hydroxysuccinamic acids (7a,b) were also prepared for spectral comparison with the 3-hydroxy compounds.

Notes: The palladium-catalyzed reaction of iodobenzene, p-haloiodobenzenes (p-C6H4IX′; X′=F, Cl, Br, I) and p-dibromobenzene with 4-vinylcyclohexene (Heck arylation reaction of olefins) was investigated with Pd(OAc)2/PR3/Et3N (R=phenyl, o-tolyl) as a classical catalyst system and with Pd(OAc)2/KOAc/[BzEt3N]Cl in DMF as a phase-transfer catalyst system, respectively. Iodobenzene reacts with 4-vinylcyclohexene to give (E)-2-(cyclohex-3-enyl) vinylbenzene (1) as main product. p-Haloiodobenzenes react with 4-vinylcyclohexene to give (E)-p-halo-2-(cyclohex-3-enyl) vinylbenzene (3), p-halo-1-(cyclohex-3-enyl) vinylbenzene (4) or (E,E)-p-bis[2-(cyclohex-3-enyl)vinyl]benzene (5) depending on the reaction conditions and the catalyst system used. The phase-transfer catalyst system is less reactive but more selective. A reaction temperature of 80°C is necessary for reaction with p-dibromobenzene. The investigations demonstrate the much higher reactivity of the exocyclic double bond of 4-vincylcyclohexene in comparison with the endocyclic one.

Notes: A New Synthetic Route to UbiquinonesUbiquinones 11 have been prepared employing a new strategy: as key step, the Diels-Alder reaction of 1,1,2-trichloroethene 3 with 2,5-bis[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]-3-methylfuran (2) has been used for the construction of the quinone part. After methanolysis of the [4 + 2] adducts 4a/4b, further reaction with cyclopentadiene and substitution of the Cl-atoms by MeO groups, the intermediate 7 is obtained. Diketone 7 can easily be alkylated with the desired polyprenyl side chain 9 (X = Br) using a strong base to yield, after a retro-Diels-Alder reaction, the corresponding ubiquinones 11 in high yields.
