    Notes: The effect of time-correlated and white Gaussian noises of low intensity on one-dimensional arrays consisting of diffusively coupled chaotic cells is analyzed. An improvement or worsening of the synchronization between cells of the array driven by low-intensity colored noise is observed for a resonant interval of time correlation values. A comparison between colored and white noise and additive and multiplicative contribution has been carried out investigating the nonlinear cooperative effects of noise strength, correlation time, and coupling strength to control spatiotemporal chaos in coupled arrays of chaotic cells. The possibility to distinguish highly correlated areas of a diffusively coupled network of cells by using low-intensity time correlated noise is discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Within the context of the rotating shallow water equations, it is shown how initially unbalanced states possessing certain symmetries dynamically evolve to lose those symmetries during nonlinear geostrophic adjustment. Using conservation law methods, it is demonstrated that the adjustment of equal and opposite (circular) mass imbalances results in a balanced end state where cyclones are stronger than anticyclones; the reverse holds true for momentum imbalances. In both cases, the degree of this asymmetry is shown to be directly proportional to the amount of initial imbalance (a measure of the nonlinearity occurring during time-dependent adjustment). On the other hand, the degree of asymmetry is maximal for imbalances of Rossby deformation scale. As for the potential vorticity, it is shown that its final profile can be noticeably different from its initial one; from an Eulerian perspective, this rearrangement is not confined to uniform shifts of potential vorticity fronts. Direct 2D numerical initial value problems confirm the asymmetry in the predicted final states and establish a relatively fast time scale for adjustment to complete. The robustness of these results is confirmed by studying, in addition, the adjustment of elliptical mass imbalances. The numerical integrations reveal that, during geostrophic adjustment, potential vorticity rearrangement occurs irreversibly on a fast wave time scale. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract.– Shrimp populations were estimated with volumetric sampling techniques during different phases of hatchery operations. Factors considered which might effect precision of estimates included stage age, density and temperature. Estimates of nauplii were obtained with coefficient of variation values smaller than 3% when nauplii were concentrated in 20-L buckets and smaller than 8% when released in 13,000 L of water in larval rearing tanks. In both cases estimates were of sufficient precision to make management decisions for routine hatchery work. A technique was developed for estimating shrimp populations in larval rearing tanks with coefficient of variation values smaller than 15%. Volumetric sampling of postlarvae older than PL4, in larval rearing tanks was highly variable due to the tendency of shrimp to congregate and attach to tank walls and bottoms. A direct relationship was observed between postlarval density and the precision of population estimates in harvest buckets. Water temperature and postlarval age did not affect precision at the densities and ages studied. These findings have important implications for commercial transactions. Industry standards utilizing coefficient of variation are recommended for larvae and postlarvae population estimates.

    Notes: Results from a series of simulations of unforced turbulence evolving within a shallow layer of fluid on a rotating sphere are presented. Simulations show that the turbulent evolution in the spherical domain is strongly dependent on numerical and physical conditions. The independent effects of (1) (hyper)dissipation and initial spectrum, (2) rotation rate, and (3) Rossby deformation radius are carefully isolated and studied in detail. In the nondivergent and nonrotating case, an initially turbulent flow evolves into a vorticity quadrupole at long times, a direct consequence of angular momentum conservation. In the presence of sufficiently strong rotation, the nondivergent long-time behavior yields a field dominated by polar vortices—as previously reported by Yoden and Yamada. In contrast, the case with a finite deformation radius (i.e., the full spherical shallow-water system) spontaneously evolves toward a banded configuration, the number of bands increasing with the rotation rate. A direct application of this shallow-water model to the Jovian atmosphere is discussed. Using standard values for the planetary radius and rotation, we show how the initially turbulent flow self-organizes into a potential vorticity field containing zonal structures, where regions of steep potential vorticity gradients (jets) separate relatively homogenized bands. Moreover, Jovian parameter values in our simulations lead to a strong vorticity asymmetry, favoring anticyclonic vortices—in further agreement with observations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The rheological properties of different brands of commercial tomato paste, sauce, puree and ketchup were estimated by imperfect squeezing flow viscosimetry using a wide plate and a shallow container. The tests were performed with polished and grooved surfaces. In both, slip was prominent to such an extent that the equations for lubricated squeezing flow had to be used for the calculation of rheological parameters. Despite its crudeness, the procedure was sensitive enough to consistently monitor rheological differences between commercial products of different brands in terms of the apparent stress at a given specimen height, the consistency, K, and flow index, n, of the pseudoplastic liquid constitutive equation, and the apparent biaxial elongational viscosity, μb and its strain rate dependency. In tomato paste, the flow behavior index was approximately the same in all the brands (n ∼ 0.5), and the values of K and μb had a linear relationship. Residual forces after relaxation provided an additional textural measure related to the yield stress. Differences between products of different brands could be consistently monitored regardless of whether the test was performed at a fixed specimen height or a preset initial force.

    Notes: Increased levels of a 40–42 amino-acid peptide called the amyloid β protein (Aβ) and evidence of oxidative damage are early neuropathological markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous investigations have demonstrated that melatonin is decreased during the aging process and that patients with AD have more profound reductions of this hormone. It has also been recently shown that melatonin protects neuronal cells from Aβ-mediated oxidative damage and inhibits the formation of amyloid fibrils in vitro. However, a direct relationship between melatonin and the biochemical pathology of AD had not been demonstrated. We used a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's amyloidosis and monitored over time the effects of administering melatonin on brain levels of Aβ, abnormal protein nitration, and survival of the mice. We report here that administration of melatonin partially inhibited the expected time-dependent elevation of β-amyloid, reduced abnormal nitration of proteins, and increased survival in the treated transgenic mice. These findings may bear relevance to the pathogenesis and therapy of AD.

    Notes: Background: It has been reported that total serum IgE is increased in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, but it is not clear if this fact is related to alcoholic liver disease or to alcohol intake.Objective: To measure serum IgE in a group of chronic alcoholics with different stages of liver injury in order to elucidate if IgE increase is related to alcoholic liver damage.Patients and methods: Total serum IgE was determined by enzyme immunoassay in 186 chronic alcoholic patients (137 male/49 female) and 101 healthy controls. Patients and controls with known reasons for IgE elevation were excluded. Among alcoholic patients, 24 had fatty liver, 28 hepatic fibrosis, 29 alcoholic hepatitis, and 67 liver cirrhosis (38 patients were not evaluable concerning liver injury).Results: Total serum IgE was found to be increased in alcoholics (median 154.5IU/mL, range 1–7329IU/mL) with respect to healthy controls (median 20IU/mL, range 〈 1–1417 IU/mL) (P 〈 0.001). IgE increase was moderate (180–1000 IU/mL) in 60 alcoholics (32.3%) and marked (〉 1000 IU/mL) in 27 (14.5%). Male alcoholics had higher IgE levels than females (median 191 IU/mL and range 1–7329 IU/mL vs 105IU/mL and range 2–2189IU/mL) (P= 0.009). On logistic regression analysis, alcoholism, male sex and younger age (but not smoking) were independently associated with higher IgE levels. No clear relationship was noted between serum IgE and severity of alcoholic liver disease. Thus, no correlation was observed between IgE and parameters of liver function (serum bilirubin, albumin or prothrombin index). Likewise, IgE concentrations were not significantly different in patients with liver cirrhosis with respect to patients with less severe liver disease. Serum IgE was increased (〉 180 IU/mL) in 47.8 % of cirrhotics and in 44% of patients without liver cirrhosis. In contrast, other immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM) were significantly correlated with liver dysfunction.Conclusion: Chronic alcoholism should be considered as a cause of increased total serum IgE, regardless of the severity of the underlying liver disease.
