Notes: Silicon-doped n-type gallium arsenide crystals, compensated with diffused copper, were studied with respect to their application as photoconductive, high-power closing switches. The attractive features of GaAs:Cu switches are their high dark resistivity, their efficient activation with Nd:YAG laser radiation, and their microsecond conductivity decay time constant. In our experiment, electric fields as high as 19 kV/cm were switched, and current densities of up to 10 kA/cm2 were conducted through a closely compensated crystal. At field strengths greater than approximately 10 kV/cm, a voltage "lock-on'' effect was observed.

Notes: A modification of a commercial electrostatic voltmeter which operates on the Kelvin–Zisman principle is described which permits operation inside a vacuum system at pressures below 5.0×10−8 Torr. This allows for in-vacuum electrostatic measurements of voltages of up to 5 kV.

Notes: Pictures are presented of the time evolution of current filaments during optically triggered, high gain switching in GaAs. Two filaments are triggered with two laser diode arrays and the time delay between them is varied. When the filament that is triggered first crosses the switch the voltage drops and the other filament ceases to grow. By varying the delay between the lasers, the tip velocity is measured to be 2±1×109 cm/s, 100 times larger than the peak drift velocity of carriers in GaAs. This observation supports switching models that rely on carrier generation at the tip of the filament.

Notes: A technique for Slater orbital exponent optimization in an HF—SCF—LCAO—MO calculation is proposed in which orbital exponent variation is incorporated into the SCF scheme. This is accomplished by rewriting Slater's rules so that the shielding terms depend on the molecular charge distribution through the elements of the population matrix. The SCF scheme then includes a calculation of a new set of orbital exponents from the coefficients of self-consistent molecular orbitals obtained from the previous set of exponents. The process is iterated until the energy attains its lowest value. The technique is illustrated by minimal basis calculations on LiH, BH, and HF. Near optimization is obtained with considerably less effort than is necessary for other reported techniques. Aside from interesting properties, the technique can be important for extended basis calculations where exponent optimization is a difficult task.
