    Notes: Abstract  Significant coral reef ecosystems occur along the northwest (NW) coast of Australia in an oceanographic setting somewhat similar to that of the Great Barrier Reef off the northeast (NE) Australian coast. Seasonal and inter-annual variations of several surface climate variables are described for the NW coastal region of Australia from 10°–30°S over the period 1960 to 1992. Average climatic conditions in this region are compared with those for similar latitudes on the Great Barrier Reef. On average, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) along the NW Australian coast are warmer than at similar latitudes along the NE coast north of ∼20°S and cooler than the NE coast at higher latitudes. The annual range of SSTs along the NW coast is lower than found along the NE coast. There is also lower average cloud amount (and greater incoming solar radiation) along the NW coast compared with the NE coast. Corals reefs off the NW Australian coast are less likely to be influenced by freshwater and associated terrestrial impacts than nearshore reefs of the GBR. Although the latitudinal distribution of tropical cyclone activity is similar along the NW and NE Australian coasts, the total number of tropical cyclones and tropical cyclone days is substantially higher on the NW coast compared with the NE coast.

    Notes: Abstract Seasonal and inter-annual variation of several surface climate variables near the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are described for the 30-year period, 1958–1987. Large inter-annual variability of rainfall and river flow in coastal Queensland is linked to the aperiodic influences of El Niño-Southern Oscillation events. These events also affect sea surface temperature and wind fields, though the inter-annual variability of these variables is not as large as rainfall and river flow. The major impacts on waters of the GBR appear to be greatly increased freshwater inputs, reduced surface radiation (and thus light levels) and enhanced tropical cyclone activity during anti-El Niño events. El Niño events have less effect on climate of the GBR because they tend to maintain winter-like conditions. The effects of this background of high variability in the physical environment on reef processes must be considered when examining changes in such processes, changes in climate (e.g. due to global warming) or increases in anthropogenic impacts.

    Notes: Abstract  The construction in 1988 of an open-cut gold mine and ore-processing facility at Misima Island, Papua New Guinea, resulted in disturbance of the adjacent fringing coral reef, mostly because of large increases in sedimentation. This provided an opportunity to examine whether growth characteristics of the major reef-building coral, Porites, changed in response to this sudden and sustained increase in sedimentation. Annual variation in skeletal density was measured in 93 colonies variously affected by sedimentation. The colonies provided data for average annual density, annual extension and annual calcification covering the periods 5 y before and 5 y after mining operations began. The average depth of skeleton occupied by tissue (tissue layer thickness) was also measured for most colonies. There was high mortality of Porites in regions strongly affected by increased sedimentation. In colonies that survived, density, extension and calcification tended to be less (in some cases significantly) in the period after mining operations began compared with pre-construction levels. However, these decreases were not linked with proximity to the mine site and probably reflect a regional-scale response of Porites growth to some other environmental change. This suggests that periods of high sedimentation may not be recorded by the growth characteristics of massive Porites. Average growth characteristics of surviving Porites from Misima Island were similar to those from inshore reefs of the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Tissue layer thickness in Porites from the control areas at Misima Island were also similar to colonies from the northern inshore GBR reefs. However, tissue layer thickness significantly decreased with increased proximity to the mine site at Misima Island.

    Notes: Abstract Seasonal and annual temperature reconstructions derived from western North American semi-arid site tree-ring chronologies are used to examine the possible spatial response of North American climate to volcanic eruptions within the period 1602 to 1900. Low-latitude eruptions appear to give the strongest response. Cooling of the annual average temperatures in the central and eastern United States is reconstructed to follow volcanic eruptions with warming in the western states. The magnitude and spatial extent of the reconstructed cooling and warming varies seasonally. The warming that occurs in the west is strongest and most extensive in winter while the cooling in the east is most marked in summer. These results are based on reconstructed climate records which contain error terms unrelated to climatic factors. The suggested pattern of response to volcanic forcing is, however, supported by four independent temperature/proxy temperature series within the area of the temperature reconstructions. Additional support is provided by three independent series lying outside the area which suggest that the temperature spatial response may extend to the north beyond the area covered by the tree-ring reconstructions.

    Notes: Abstract Annual surface temperature variations, 1602 to 1961, averaged over 77 United States and southwestern Canadian stations, are reconstructed from 65 aridsite tree-ring chronologies of western North America. Annual sea-level pressure reconstructions averaged over the North Pacific sector including North America and eastern Asia are inversely related to the temperature variations. Both the instrumental and reconstructed North American temperature averages are well correlated with Northern Hemisphere average temperatures during the early 20th-century warming but the correlation diminishes after the mid-1940s. The 1918 to 1947 interval is reconstructed to have been the warmest and 1877 to 1906 the coolest. The correlations between the temperature record and other high resolution temperature series from the Northern Hemisphere are generally insignificant. However, significant correlations are noted for certain 30-yr time periods. North American temperatures appear to have been out of phase with temperatures in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Significant variations in the 30-yr mean temperatures are noted in several of the North American series. The warming early in the 20th century is the most marked followed by warming from 1717 to 1723 and from 1850 to 1866. Significant cooling occurs from 1810 to 1821 and from 1659 to 1669.
