Notizen: Many studies have been made about the physio-logical effects of isolated chronic or acute stress. However, few studies have been made to assess the combination of both responses. The fish submitted to chronic stress may be subjected to an additional acute stressor. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the acute stress response in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) previously subjected to chronic stress. For this, two experiments were performed. In the first experiment, the fish were subjected to chronic stress followed by an additional acute stress. In the second experiment, the fish were submitted only to an acute stress. The data showed that Nile tilapia fingerlings can adapt to chronic stress situations, and this decreases, but does not eliminate, their capacity to respond to an additional acute stressor. In both experiments, plasma cortisol levels reached a peak 1 h after administration of the acute stressor. In fish previously submitted to chronic stress, the highest concentration of plasma cortisol measured was 196 ng mL–1. This value was significantly different from the cortisol concentration obtained in the second experiment (267 ng mL–1) with non-chronically stressed fish. The data also suggest that the chronic stress response can provoke a reduction in performance and growth rates compared with non-stressed fish.

Notizen: Several researchers have demonstrated that the stocking density and social interactions between conspecific fish have significant influence on stress response. Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) is a teleost fish with hierarchical organization. Nile tilapia fingerlings (20 ± 5 g) were distributed in 30 tanks, 12 tanks with single fish and six with paired, groups of five and 10 fish, respectively, and held in these 100-L plastic tanks for 60 days. Six tanks of single fish and three of other groups received an acute stressor on the 61st day. The control fish reared singly and in pairs showed a plasma cortisol concentration similar to that normally found as a resting cortisol concentration in other fish. One surprising result was the absence of the formation of a hierarchical dominant/submissive relation between the fish held in pairs. One possible explanation for this result is the volume of the tank, so that each fish exerted a territorial position in a corner of the tank, and the fighting and antagonistic encounters did not occur. In the five- and 10-fish groups, the resting plasma cortisol concentrations were higher, which may indicate a chronic stress response during the 60 days of the experiment, attributable to social stress. The application of an acute stressor significantly increased the plasma cortisol levels in all stocking densities, with values reaching 135–298 ng mL− 1. When comparing the stressed fish, the 10-fish groups showed a more intense stress response in relation to the other groups.

Notizen: The plasma concentrations of testosterone (T) of cultured jundiáRhamdia quelen increased progressively during spermatogenesis and reached a peak at the beginning of spermiation (e.g. fluidization of the sperm and production of milt). Plasma peaks of T occurred simultaneously to the highest production of T by the testis, however, both plasma concentrations and testis production of T decreased progressively during spermiation. Concentrations of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) peaked c. 1 month after the peak of T, concomitant with enhanced production of 11-KT by the testis. The concentrations of 11-KT during the first cycle were extremely high (〉 1 μg ml−1), but less during the second and third cycles, suggesting that this steroid is most important during the pubertal phase in male jundiá. Plasma concentrations of both 17-hydroxy-4-pregene-3,20-dione (17-P) and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregen-3-one (17,20β-P) were significantly higher during spermiation than at any other times, and showed little variation. The pattern of steroid changes was cyclical and consistent with their proposed roles in male fish reproduction.

Notizen: Abstract Neurological dysfunction is common in patients with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). However, the mechanisms underlying the neuropathology of this disorder are poorly understood. We determined the concentrations of all amino acids in plasma of patients with MSUD during crises (with severe CNS symptoms) and after recovery in the hope of detecting possible alterations of these levels during metabolic decompensation. Blood samples obtained from 11 children with MSUD aged 1 month to 7 years and from 10 age-matched controls (5 months to 6 years) with no evidence of metabolic disease were examined for their amino acid content by high-performance liquid chromatography. We observed that leucine, isoleucine and valine concentrations were respectively 30, 9 and 3 times higher than normal values, whereas the concentrations of the large neutral amino acids (LNAA) phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan and methionine were significantly lower during metabolic decompensation as compared to the controls. In addition, concentrations of leucine, but not of valine or isoleucine, were inversely related to the LNAA concentrations in plasma. The concentrations of these amino acids in plasma returned to normal values when patients were clinically well. CSF amino acid concentrations also showed decreased amounts of LNAA and increased concentrations of branched-chain amino acids. It is possible that the decrease in plasma concentrations of LNAA may lead to a deficit of these essential amino acids in the brain as well as of their products such as proteins and neurotransmitters, a fact that might be related to the neurological dysfunction of MSUD.
