Notes: Abstract During the period from June 1982 to March 1983, there was a prolonged shutdown of the INCO and Falconbridge smelters at Sudbury, Ontario. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Air Resources Branch of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment undertook a detailed analysis of the impact that the resulting emission reductions had on the atmospheric deposition of acidity and SOX in Ontario. This paper summarizes the various meteorological analyses and mathematical modeling estimates that were carried out in order to determine the contribution of the Sudbury smelters to atmospheric deposition in Ontario. For sulfates, the Sudbury contribution to the total wet deposition was typically less than 15% at the receptors studied. Furthermore, the smelters were found to contribute on the order of 10 to 20% of the total dry deposition of S compounds in central and northeastern Ontario, and less than 10% elsewhere.

Notes: Abstract Experiments have been carried out to assess the precision and various potential sources of error in precipitation chemistry and deposition measurements made by the Acidic Precipitation in Ontario Study (APIOS). It was found that reproducibility of daily precipitation concentration measurements of S04 − and NO3 − using colocated Aerochem Metrics samplers is 96% or better for 50% of the time, and 73% or better for 95 % of the time. For these parameters, MIC Type A 28-d samplers give reproducibilities of 94% or better 50% of the time, and 79% or better 95 % of the time. The reproducibility for the concentration of the other major ions, and loading (concentration times sample depth) is somewhat poorer. Concentration changes due to sample degradation or evaporative losses under field conditions are negligible or small on average, even for 28-d samples. For 28-d concentration measurements using MIC Type A collectors, errors due to evaporation amount to about 3% as an annual average, and 5% during the summer period. For S04 − and NO3 −, overall long-term errors due to exposure under field conditions (including dry contamination and degradation due to chemical reactions), and sample handling, are less than 10%, at least for the techniques used in APIOS. A major potential source of error still to be quantified is unrepresentative sampling by automatic wet-only collectros (i.e., missing of initial portions of precipitation events due to sluggish sensor response, or less than 100% collection efficiencies of precipitation amounts).

Notes: Abstract The spatial patterns of the precipitation-weighted mean concentration and total deposition of sulfate and nitrate in Ontario from 1981 to 1983 were determined using the Modified Simple Kriging method. The 3-yr averaged spatial patterns of sulfate and nitrate concentrations were similar to the sulfate and nitrate 3-yr averaged deposition patterns in Ontario. The overall spatial variability of nitrate was slightly higher than sulfate. The seasonal variation of nitrate concentrations and deposition were less regular than sulfate.

Notes: The diffusion of various inert and of hydrogen-bonding solutes into aliphatic alcohols was considered. The diffusivities of benzene, p-dichlorobenzene, biphenyl, and triphenyl methane in methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, n-pentanol, and n-heptanol were measured at 25°C. for low solute concentrations. An equation was developed for the limiting values of the binary mutual diffusion coefficient in complex-forming mixtures. This equation, used in conjunction with the Wilke-Chang correlation, gave a considerable improvement over existing predictive methods for the diffusivity of inert solutes, mono- and polyhydroxy alcohols, and water in aliphatic alcohols.
