Notes: We demonstrate a new ultrafast pump-probe technique using terahertz pulses to investigate carrier transport and screening in semiconductors. As an example we have studied the temporal evolution of the local electric field in a dipole antenna, used for generation of ultrafast terahertz pulses. Ultrafast screening effects are shown to be important for both carrier transport and the emission of THz radiation. At high carrier densities the external bias field is screened on a time scale comparable to the duration of the THz pulse, giving rise to changes in the shape and bandwidth of the radiated pulses.

Notes: Abstract The absorption-, reflection-, and luminescence spectra of CdS1−x Se x are measured under low excitation. The luminescence under high excitation is also observed. For the first time, the gain spectra of disordered crystals are investigated with the excite- and probebeam technique to get a better understanding of the high density electron-hole pair system in this type of materials. We compare the results with those obtained in pure CdS and CdSe.

Notes: Abstract We investigate and analyze the time-integrated nonlinear optical behaviour of an electronhole plasma in CdS as a function of the temperature and the exciting intensity. The competition between the temperature dependences of the absorption tail and of the manyparticle effects leads with increasing temperature around 160 K to a turn-over from a red- to a blue-shift of the absorption edge under excitation. The frequency dependence of the absorption for high plasma concentrations is in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Notes: Summary The optical properties of multiple quantum wells in the transition from isolated wells to a superlattice are investigated theoretically and experimentally. For superlattices with a miniband width similar to the binding energy of the 2s exciton of the isolated quantum well we find an exciton state energetically between the 1s exciton state and the onset of the miniband absorption. We find this state to be an interwell exciton, with the electron confined to one well and the hole to the neighboring well. The interwell exciton resembles the first Wannier-Stark localized exciton of a biased superlattice. However, the localization in the present case is mediated by the Coulomb interaction of the electron and hole. The state has considerable oscillator strength and is observed experimentally in linear and nonlinear experiments.
