Notes: The spatiotemporal evolution of a pulsed low-pressure glow discharge is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The discharge is modelled phenomenologically by a reaction-diffusion equation in which the cathode fall and the negative glow of the discharge are described as a bistable layer. A laterally one-dimensional discharge is realized experimentally by a hollow cathode discharge in a slotted cathode. With the help of probe measurements, a homogeneous evolution with a laterally uniform current rise and an inhomogeneous evolution starting from special sites and progressing along the cathode are found. The main experimental results are reproduced by model calculations.

Notes: An aluminum plasma is produced by an anodic vacuum arc (25 A, 17 V) with a consumable anode. The plasma expands from the anode to the walls and is investigated by Langmuir probes, a quadrupole mass spectrometer, a retarding field ion energy analyzer, and a quartz-crystal oscillator for mass flow detection. The electron density ranges within 2×1015–3×1017 m−3 and the electron temperature within 0.4–0.9 eV. At a target, ion fluxes of 1.5×1019–8×1020 m−2 s−1 and total particle fluxes of 3×1020–4×1021 m−2 s−1 are measured. The ions are accelerated in the expanding plasma towards the target and gain a few eV. By a simple collisionless transport model of the expanding plasma, the plasma potential and floating potential are calculated and compared with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract Positive and negative ions of Ar/SF6 and Ar/SF6/O2 plasmas (etching plasmas) and of Ar/O2 plasmas (cleaning plasmas) in Pyrex tubes have been investigated using a mass spectrometer-wall probe diagnostic technique. The measurement of negative ions proved to be a very sensitive method for the detection of wall material. In etching plasmas with small admixtures of SF6, oxygen was found as the only representative of wall material. At larger amounts of SF6, silicon could be detected. In cleaning plasmas with small admixtures of O2 applied to a previously etched Pyrex surface, fluorine was found, indicating the reversal of fluoridation by oxygenation.

To begin with we discuss the applicability of Debye-Hückel-Theory to the plasma. In addition to the well known Onsager-Kirkwood-condition we find another limitation which depends on whether averaging is possible or not. The general formulation of the force on a neutral or charged particle can be simplified by making use of the separation in individual and collective components. The result justifies the polarisation-approximation used here and in I to account for the collective interaction of the system. Moreover we find that only that fraction of the individual interaction energy is of importance which shows correlation to the field at the origin. This correlation causes differences in the results for neutral and charged particles. As long asδ〉0 holds this difference is restricted to large fields. In contrast to I we were able to carry through the evaluation without using the cutoff-approximation. Furthermore we investigate the relations near the limit δ=0.

Notes: Abstract Propagation and deflection of guided modes in a polymer slab waveguide is studied. Rotation of the grating structure with respect to the plane of incidence deflects the waveguide modes in the plane of the sample so that the propagation direction is no longer perpendicular to the grating grooves. The deflection angles are measured as a function of the grating rotation angle and the experimental results are compared with theoretically expected values. The difference in polarization behaviour between waveguide and plasmon surface polariton grating rotation coupling is shown.

Notes: Abstract A microwave interferometer is described, by which the electron density in a small volume inside of a plasma can be measured. By dielectric rods acting as waveguides the microwave is led to this volume. For a given electron density the phase shift is calculated for this volume and for the dielectric rods. By a suitable choice of the radius and the dielectric constant of the rods the phase shift along the rods can be surpressed. The influence of plasma sheaths is discussed. In a special application to the plasma of the negative glow these interferometric measurements are compared with Langmuir probe measurements.

Notes: Abstract A simple model for the motion of electrons in an inhomogeneous electric field is derived. With this model the striations in a weakly ionized low pressure discharge can be explained as a phenomenon of the energy relaxation. In a periodical electric field resonances occur, for which the voltage across one striation equals the average energy gain of an electron between two inelastic collisions, divided by an integer. These resonances are recognized as eigensolutions in the homogeneous field. The influence of the elastic and ineiastic collisions on the damping of the striations is discussed. In a first approximation the energy loss at the elastic collisions can be taken into account by a frictional contribution to the voltage across one striation. This voltage and the energy distribution function in moving striations are calculated and compared with measurements of other authors.
