Notes: Summary. Function of the pituitary-adrenal axis was assessed in 16 adult female patients who had been taking cyproterone acetate for 〉1 year. Some evidence of reduced basal cortisol output was seen in 25% of the patients, but plasma cortisol levels could be stimulated both by hypoglycaemia and by direct corticotrophin (ACTH) stimulation. The latter effect was confirmed by analysis of steroid excretion in urine although basal excreation rates indicated extensive adrenal suppression. These results suggest that cyproterone acetate does have some glucocorticoid activity which is able partially to suppress the pituitary—adrenal axis, but leaves it still responsive to stress.

Notes: Graves's disease is characterized by hyperthyroidism, a diffuse, uniform enlargement of the thyroid gland and marked eye signs. It is now widely believed that the thyroid overactivity of Graves's disease is a result of the presence in the circulation of abnormal thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIg). TSIg are transferred from mother to fetus and cause neonatal thyrotoxicosis in around 1 per cent of babies born to mothers who have a history of Graves's disease. Because TSIg may persist in the maternal circulation after successful treatment of Graves's disease by partial thyroidectomy, neonatal thyrotoxicosis may occur in babies born to mothers who have been euthyroid throughout pregnancy. In our study, 9 of 12 examples of neonatal thyrotoxicosis encountered in 96 pregnancies occurred in babies born to mothers who were thought to be thyrotoxic at some stage during the pregnancy. Two main categories of TSIg are recognized: the long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) and LATS-protector (LATS-P) both of which were assayed in maternal serum samples withdrawn during the third trimester. Levels in maternal and cord blood were similar. The critical level of TSIg causing neonatal thyrotoxicosis appeared to be 10 units/ml and above 20 units/ml the babies were always thyrotoxic at birth.

Notes: Abstract A rigorous model is developed to calculate the shortwave radiation incident on building surfaces, based on radiation enclosure theory. When compared with field measurements, the model predictions are found to be associated with errors of approximately 10 W m−2, with underestimations of 5–10 W m−2 being caused on some walls by neglect of specular reflections. The effects of various simplifying assumptions are tested. The assumption of isotropic sky radiation and the neglect of multiple reflections are found to lead to errors of 15 W m−2 or less; the neglect of horizon obstructions and the use of albedos taken from the literature instead of measured values can result in errors of 50 W m−2 or more. Although these magnitudes of errors are site-specific, it is concluded that the use of simplifications in the modelling of shortwave radiation incident on urban surfaces must be approached with care.

Notes: Abstract Stability correction functions which combine the exponent of z/L, and a linear term in z/L, are proposed for the unstable case. The functions provide a reasonably close fit to the Φ m and Φ h results of Dyer and Hicks (1970) for 0 〈 −z/L ⩽ 1, but they cannot be extended to cases of strong instability. Attractive features are the ability to integrate the expressions directly in terms of z/L, and a particularly close fit of the integrated result to experimentally derived ψ m values.

Notes: Abstract The profile structure of wind speed and temperature in katabatic flow over a melting glacier is analyzed within the log-linear framework. Similarity between windspeed and temperature profiles is indicated but the log-linear model should be restricted to heights within 1.5 m of the ice. Marked deviation from the model occur at greater heights, probably due to the effects of flux divergence. Unlike results from other stable atmospheres, a decreases with increasing stability. This may arise from the use of the Obukhov length L. When the height H at which the wind speed reaches its maximum value is used instead, α does not vary with stability. It has mean values of 4.5 and 4.3 for windspeed and temperature profiles, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The model developed in Verseghy and Munro (1989) is extended to the calculation of the longwave radiation incident on building surfaces. When compared with field measurements, the average magnitude of error associated with model predictions is found to be 10 W m−2. The effects of six simplifying assumptions are investigated. The neglect of horizon obstructions is found to lead to errors of up to 60 W m−2; the assumption of wall temperatures equal to air temperatures results in errors of up to 35 W m−2. The neglect of absorption and emission by air between pairs of walls causes errors of the same magnitude as those associated with the predictions of the rigorous model itself. Of the three remaining simplifying assumptions tested (the assumption of isotrophic sky radiation, the use of published values of emissivities instead of measured values, and the blackbody surface assumption), none results om errors 〉5 W m−2. As in the shortware case, the errors are site-specific, but nevertheless indicate the care with which the use of simplifying assumptions must be approached.

Notes: Abstract An experimental study of the modification of the neutral wind profile as air flows to a rougher surface is presented. The analysis is based on wind profiles measured at four locations extending about 100 m downwind from the leading edge of a mature wheat crop. The form of the modified wind profile, and the rate of internal boundary-layer growth are analyzed in terms of a non-dimensional wind velocity. Friction velocities, based on wind-profile computations, are also examined at different points in the flow field. Boundary-layer growth was more rapid than expected, but could be approximated by a 4/5th power of the fetch if a roughness factor is included. It is suggested that simple height:fetch ratios, such as 1:100 be avoided, especially where large roughness-length changes are involved.

Notes: Abstract Human thyroid cells in monolayer responded to acute stimulation by TSH with an increase in the secretion of T3. This process appeared to be dependent on a rise in the cytosolic calcium concentration since the antagonist of intraceliular calcium mobilization, TMB-8, was found to inhibit the release of T3 in response to TSH. The importance of intracellular calcium was further shown using the agent veratridine which increases the free calcium level within cells; veratridine potentiated the stimulation of T3 secretion by TSH and itself stimulated the release of T3 to a level higher than that seen in the presence of TSH alone. The calcium ionophore A23197 produced a biphasic effect on T3 secretion from human thyroid monolayers; at low concentrations, A23187 caused a decrease in both unstimulated and TSH-stimulated T3 secretion but above a concentration of 1 μM, T3 secretion was increased. The calmodulin antagonist W7 was found to inhibit T3 release in response to TSH, indicating a role for calmodulin in mediating the effects of intracellular calcium on T3 secretion.
