Notes: Abstract The image-processing system based on a two-dimensional Fourier transform is presented for the analysis of Young’s fringes pattern created from a double-exposure speckle photograph. The fringe spacing and orientation are determined using only one Young’s fringes pattern without any other diffraction halo patterns. The stress-intensity factors of a mixed-mode interface crack were measured by speckle photography. A compact normal and shear specimen with an interface crack was employed. This specimen enables us to carry out the experiment under various kinds of mixed-mode loading. A steel and an epoxy resin were used as dissimilar materials. The displacement along the crack lines at the free surface was measured by speckle photography. The K1 and K11 values were determined by a least squares method using displacement data along the crack lines. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was carried out on the same specimen. An accuracy of stress intensity factors obtained by the speckle photography was discussed by comparison of results obtained by the finite element analysis.

Notes: We developed the 3-D local hybrid method to evaluate the 3-D stress field inside thespecimen from displacement data on the free surface obtained from the 2-D intelligent hybridmethod. When a uniform load was applied to the structure with a surface crack, high accuracy wasalready acquired in stress analyses. The 3-D local hybrid method was anew applied to a structurewith a surface crack which is subjected to bending load. It is expected that the accuracy depends onlocal model size. In this study, the width, the thickness and the height of the local model werechanged widely, and analyses were carried out. Then the size of the local model necessary for theanalyses was examined. Assessment of analyses was performed by comparing J integral value of awhole model and a local model

Notes: In previous studies, the elastic stress field near the crack tip was investigated by digital image correlation and the 2-D intelligent hybrid method. In this study, the 2-D nonlinear hybrid method was developed to analyze the elastic-plastic singular stress field near the crack tip from the displacement data obtained by digital image correlation. Then, the 2-D nonlinear hybrid method was carried out to evaluate stress, strain and J integral. The 3-D elastic-plastic finite element method was conducted on the same specimen as the experiment, and the validity of this approach was discussed from the comparison of the experiment and 3-D finite element method

Notes: The interior stress field of the surface crack specimen subjected to a uniform tensile loadhas been successfully analyzed by the 3-D local hybrid method. In this study, it was examinedwhether the 3-D local hybrid method was applicable to the specimen subjected to the bending load.It has been understood that the decision of the optimal size of the local model is indispensable in theimprovement of accuracy from the previous research. Then, the width and thickness of the localmodel were changed widely, and analyses were carried out to find the optimal hybrid local modelsize. Moreover, it was examined how to decide the optimal size of the hybrid local model withvarious crack length and aspect ratio of the specimen. The optimal size of the hybrid local modelwas examined from the comparison with the J integral of the whole model

Notes: Influence of the frequency to the temperature image obtained by an infraredthermography was investigated using specimens of three kinds of materials at four kinds offrequencies of the cyclic load. Then, the infrared hybrid method was developed to separateindividual stress components. However, the influence of heat conduction is inevitable in the infraredstress measurement method. Therefore, an error arises in the infrared hybrid analysis. Then, thesystem which corrects the error by the inverse analysis was developed. Thereby, the accuracy of thestress intensity factor was able to be raised. Furthermore, the accuracy of hybrid methodconsidering to heat conduction was discussed in comparison with the 3-D finite element analysisand 2-D hybrid method

Notes: In generally, it is known that structures of living thing are optimized. The wings of adragonfly are thin and light. Although it is having the structure of bearing the load produced in thecase of an advanced flight such as “Flapping flight”, “Glide”, and “Hovering”. The wings of adragonfly are made by veins and membranes. In addition, the wings of a dragonfly have somecharacteristic structures, such as “Nodus”. Thus, the wings of dragonfly have many complicatedstructures. The configuration of costal vein of the wings is different from them of other insects. So,we paid attention to the configuration of costal vein of the wings. Therefore, in this study, weresearched about the effect of costal vein. As a result, it was showed that the configuration of costalvein became bending and torsional deformation small. In addition, it was showed that theconfiguration of costal vein related to nodus. In this study, several 3-D models of the dragonfly’swing were made and calculated by the 3-D finite element method

Notes: Displacements obtained experimentally normally are including errors that make itimpossible to extract stresses strains with high accuracy using the raw displacement data. In theinfinitesimal deformation within the elastic region of a steel or an aluminum alloy, the quantity ofdisplacement is less than 1 pixel, and analysis accuracy deteriorates. We have developed a systemwhich employs the 2-D intelligent hybrid method and can analyze the displacement more exactly inthe sub-pixel field. By using the Newton-Raphson method in conjunction with 2nd orderdeformation gradients, it is demonstrated that this method can accurately extract stress intensityfactors from a set of measured displacements
