Summary The effect of pyridine at a fixed concentration of perchloric acid (0.36 M) on the sorption of some common cations on a cation exchanger (Dowex 50W-X8; in Naform) is described. The metal concentrations were such that the ratio of total amount of cation to total resin capacity ≈0.45, sufficient to ensure exchange. The deviation in sorption behaviour of cations has been discussed on the basis of complexation with pyridine and the perchlorate effect. From the determination of the distribution coefficients (Λ) and separation factors as a function of pyridine concentration, separation possibilities for a number of binary and ternary mixtures are proposed.
