Abstract The similarity of immunological characteristics of vertebrate and tunicate tropomyosins was studied with special regard to the phylogeny of tunicates. The antigenic sites common to vertebrate skeletal muscle tropomyosin was detected by immunohistochemical methods in the tail muscle of ascidians and muscle bands of thaliaceans, but not in the tail muscle of appendicularians. From this result, the phylogeny of the tunicate is speculated and compared with that postulated in studles of comparative morphology and taxonomy.
