Notes: Summary Preoperative knowledge of the gastric arterial blood-supply with special regard to anatomic anomalies is desirable for a correct surgical approach to this viscus and for the reduction of intra- and postoperative complication rates. The authors report their experience with the use of preoperative digital angiography in the evaluation of 46 consecutive patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery. Twenty of these (43.5 %) presented a vascular anatomy different from the normal pattern. In 6 (13 %), a double arterial anomaly was detected. Some anatomic anomalies of the celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery are described in relation to operative procedures during oncologic gastrectomies.

Notes: [Auszug] In an attempt to determine the localization histo-logically, Armour thyroid stimulating hormone (lot U 3502) was labelled with lissamine-rhodamine B 200 by a modification of Chadwick's method for serum proteins4. As a result of this labelling 0-1537 pinole of fluorescent dye was bound to 1 mgm. of ...

Notes: The study objective was assessing whether circulation of smears and discussion of those with differing interpretation can increase reproducibility between laboratories. The study included: the blind interpretation of a first set of 194 smears among seven laboratories, the discussion of smears with discrepant diagnoses during the previous phase and the blind interpretation of a second set of smears of same size and characteristics. After discussions, the overall weighted kappa increased in five laboratories (substantially in three : +50%, +27% and +20%). However, no change was observed in one laboratory and a slight decrease (−4%) in another. The latter interpreted the second set of smears at a longer time interval from discussions. Agreement improved for all diagnostic classes except low grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LSIL). Overall, the intervention increased diagnostic agreement, but its effect varied with laboratory and by diagnostic class and could be transient. Continued programmes of smear exchange and discussion appear to be advisable.

Notes: Abstract Stratigraphic investigations of the Vulsini Volcanic District indicate the existence of five prominent plinian fall deposits, deposited over a period of about 0.34 Ma. The oldest deposit (‘Basal pumices’) crops out mainly in the peripheral areas and is one of the largest plinian events in the Vulsini District, with a volume of about 9 km3 and a calculated column height exceeding 30 km. Subcircular patterns of isopachs and isopleths around the Bolsena lake indicate emplacement in wind-free conditions and suggest a source vent location in the northernmost sector of the present Bolsena lake, where it is possible that an older central volcanic structure existed. The four younger plinian fall deposits are related to Bolsena activity. The oldest of these, named the ‘Ponticello’ and ‘Orvieto-Bagnoregio’ pumices, are mainly distributed on the north-eastern sector of the Vulsini District. Their volumes are an order of magnitude lower than that of the basal unit, and the estimated column heights do not exceed 20 km. The younger ‘Ospedaletto’ pumice deposit has a NE-SW dispersal axis, whereas the youngest ‘Casetta’ pumice deposit is found only in the north-eastern sector of the district. Their estimated volumes are respectively 1.2 and 0.1 km3, whereas the inferred vent areas appear to be located slightly to the east of the Ponticello and Orvieto-Bagnoregio pumice deposit source areas. The chronology of the Ospedaletto and Casetta pumices indicates that the final plinian activity from the Bolsena complex is contemporaneous with the Latera activity. The decreasing volumes from the oldest to the youngest units, together with the progressive shifting northeastwards of the source vents, may be related to the volcano-tectonic subsidence of the Bolsena area. The source vents for the post-Basal pumices events are mainly clustered just north of Bolsena village where the greatest displacement during subsidence occurred. Accordingly, source vent shifting appears to be related to the progressive opening of normal faults from the inner to the outer margin of the Bolsena depression.

Notes: Abstract To test the claim that peculiar personality bias is detectable in multiple sclerosis (MS) we used the Szondi test to investigate the psychodynamic aspects of 110 MS patients in comparison with 200 healthy subjects. MS patients appeared to have a greater need for love in a passive form than normal people, rigid defense mechanisms, difficulty in resolving their inner conflicts either by sublimation or by internalization of satisfactory new emotional experiences, feelings of autoaggressiveness, and many symptoms of depression. Some of these aspects correlate with the severity of the disease, others seem to date back to early childhood as peculiar personality patterns. An investigation of childhood events in 110 controls confirmed that MS patients had had many more unhappy experiences in childhood than might commonly be expected. Further, the oft-reported psychiatric troubles preceding MS clinical onset suggest that at least in some MS patients there are specific gaps in personality structure dating back to early phases of their development
