    Notes: Summary The paper deals with the effects of indole-3 acetic acid on the histology of the gonads and their development inDacus dorsalis Hendel (Diptera; Tephritidae). Flies were topically treated with solutions of different concentrations. This treatment effectively reduced the size of gonads when applied to newly-emerged flies. Most severely affected parts were the germinal regions of the gonads. The number of sperm bundles was much reduced in the treated testes as compared to controlled ones.

    Notes: Summary As a result of pancreas stimulation with secretin-ceruletid we were able to measure the release of phospholipase A in ascites, serum, lymph, and urine in acute experimental pancreatitis in the dog. After induction of acute pancreatitis we found no increase over the normal range in serum, lymph, and urine phospholipase A activities. In addition, the stimulation of the exocrine pancreas did not show a significant change in phospholipase A activity. The excessively high phospholipase A activity in ascites following induction of acute pancreatitis fell significantly after pancreas stimulation with secretin-ceruletid.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die chloroformlöslichen Pigmente von Pseudomonas aureofaciens und P. iodina wurden chromatographisch isoliert und mit Hilfe synthetischer Eichsubstanzen identifiziert. Eine für 2-Hydroxyphenazin spezifische Farbreaktion mit Ammoniak und Formaldehyd wird beschrieben. Es folgt eine Stellungnahme zu den Redoxeigenschaften von Phenazin-1-carbonsäure, 2-Hydroxyphenazin und Iodinin anhand der Gleichstrompolarographie. Eine gleichzeitige Bestimmung von Phenazin-1-carbonsäure neben 2-Hydroxyphenazin wurde in alkalischem Phosphatpuffer mit Hilfe der Derivativ-Polarographie durchgeführt. Vergleichende Untersuchungen der Halbstufenpotentiale erlauben einige Rückschlüsse auf die Funktion der Pigmente als Redoxkatalysatoren.
    Notes: Summary The chloroform soluble pigments of Pseudomonas aureofaciens and P. iodina have been isolated chromatographically and identified by means of synthetic reference substances. A specific color reaction is developed by 2-hydroxyphenazine after treatment with ammonia and formaldehyde. The electrochemical properties of phenazine-1-carboxylic acid, 2-hydroxyphenazine and iodinin are studied by means of direct current polarography. A simultaneous determination of both phenazine-1-carboxylic acid and 2-hydroxyphenazine in the evaporated chloroform extract of Pseudomonas aureofaciens has been performed in alcaline phosphate buffer using the method of derivative polarography. Comparative studies of the half wave potentials allow conclusions on the function of the pigments as redox catalysts.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The odorous substance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is proved to be identical with 2-Aminoacetophenone. Developed from paper chromatograms of the ether- and chloroform-extracts from culture material it is characterized by the blue fluorescence in ultra-violet light and the orange-yellow coloured Azomethine after spraying with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. All strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa being tested contained this substance although in different yields. Control determinations in strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, Aeromonas hydrophila and Enterobacter aerogenes led to negative results.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Der Geruchsstoff von Pseudomonas aeruginosa ist identisch mit ortho-Aminoacetophenon. Er läßt sich in Papierchromatogrammen des Äther-oder Chloroformextraktes der Kulturen an der blauen Fluorescenz im UV-Licht erkennen und nach Besprühen mit p-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyd als orangegelb gefärbte Schiffsche Base sichtbar machen. Sämtliche untersuchten Stämme von Pseudomonas aeruginosa bilden diesen Stoff, wenn auch in unterschiedlicher Menge. Kontrolluntersuchungen an Pseudomonas fluorescens-, Aeromonas- und Enterobacter-Stämmen führten zu negativen Ergebnissen.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Das bei Pseudomonas aeruginosa vorkommende 2-Aminoacetophenon steht im Stoffwechselzusammenhang mit verschiedenen Derivaten des 4-Methylchinazolins. In gereinigten Chloroformextrakten aus Plattenkulturen von Pseudomonas aeruginosa wurden im Vergleich mit synthetischen Eichsubstanzen die betreffenden Substrate durch Papierchromatographie lokalisiert und ihre Identität anhand von Derivatchromatogrammen gesichert. Folgende Verbindungen wurden identifiziert: 4-Methylchinazolin, 2,4-Dimethylchinazolin, 4-Methyl-2-äthylchinazolin, 4-Methylchinazolin-2-carbinol und 4-Methylchinazolin-2-carbonamid. Ferner gelang im Chloroformextrakt von Sarcina lutea der Nachweis von N-Formylaminoacetophenon. Durch Versuche mit 14C-Methylen-markiertem l-Tryptophan wird gesichert, daß ein neuer Abbauweg des Tryptophans über das N-Formylkynurenin besteht und weiter über N-Formylaminoacetophenon zu 4-Methylchinazolin und freiem 2-Aminoacetophenon, das nach Reacylierung und Cyclisierung mit Ammoniak die übrigen Derivate des 4-Methylchinazolins liefert. Zu den bisher bei Pseudomonaden bekannten Tryptophanabbauwegen, dem Aromatischen Weg über die Anthranilsäure und dem Chinolinweg über die Kynurensäure, kommt noch ein dritter hinzu, der als Chinazolinweg bezeichnet wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Tyrosinstoffwechsel von 12 auf Peptonagar Melanin bildenden und 15 melaninfreien Kontrollstämmen der Species Pseudomonas aeruginosa wird untersucht. Es wird ein tyrosinfreies Ammoniumgluconat-Medium angegeben, auf dem bei gutem Wachstum aller Stämme keine Melaninbildung erfolgt. Ein Zusatz von Tyrosin oder seinen Precursoren gestattet eine deutliche Unterscheidung der Melaninbildner von den melaninfreien Stämmen innerhalb 16 Std. Die Melaninbildung wird durch Tyrosinasehemmer wie KCN, Na2S, Natriumdiäthyldithiocarbaminat usw. nicht beeinflußt. DOPA und DOPA chrom ließen sich in den Kulturextrakten nicht nachweisen. Es besteht keine Identität zwischen dem braunen Pigment und authentischem DOPA-Melanin. Sämtliche Melaninbildner zeigen eine Akkumulation von Homogentisinsäure mit nachfolgender Entwicklung eines anfangs roten, später braunen Pigmentes, während die melaninfreien Stämme keine Homogentisinsäure in nachweisbaren Mengen anhäufen. Unterbindet man die Melaninproduktion durch Anzüchtung der Keime auf tyrosinfreien Medien, so kommt es namentlich bei Zusatz von l-Tryptophan zu der für Pseudomonas aeruginosa typischen Anreicherung des Geruchsstoffes o-Aminoacetophenon und 4-Methylchinazolin. Die Hemmung des Chinazolinweges bei den Melaninbildnern wird mit der Tryptophanpyrrolase-Hemmung durch Hydrochinon verglichen. Die melaninbildenden Stämme der Species Pseudomonas aeruginosa sind nicht als tyrosinasehaltige Varianten aufzufassen, sondern als Verlustmutanten mit dem genetisch bedingten Defekt der Homogentisicase, ein Analogiefall zur Alkaptonurie.
    Notes: Summary Studies are performed on tyrosine metabolism of 12 melaninforming and 15 melanin-free strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa grown on pepton agar. Melanin production does not occur in tyrosineless ammoniumgluconate medium. Addition of tyrosine or its precursors to this basis-medium allowed to distinguish between the melanin-forming and melanin-free strains within 16 hours. Inhibitors of tyrosinase such as KCN, Na2S, sodium-diethyl-dithiocarbaminate etc. are proved to be without influence on the pigment production. DOPA and DOPA-chrome are not present in the culture extracts. There is no identity between the isolated brown pigment and authentic DOPA-melanin. All melanin-forming strains are found to be remarkable by accumulating homogentisic acid followed by developing a red, later brown pigment, whereas the melanin-free strains do not concentrate homogentisic acid in detectable amounts. Preventing the melanin formation by growth on the tyrosineless basis-medium with addition of l-tryptophan the quinazoline pathway is employed again, which had been found inhibited during simultaneously occuring production of the brown pigment. Probably this effect may be caused by accumulated homogentisic acid similar to the inhibition of tryptophan-pyrrolase by hydroquinone. The melanin-forming strains of the species Pseudomonas aeruginosa are not regarded as variants containing a tyrosinase but as mutants with a genetic defect of homogentisicase in analogy to the alcaptonuria in metabolic diseases of men.

    Notes: Summary Continuous intra-arterial blood pressure recording using the “Oxford” technique has been used to study the antihypertensive effects of oxprenolol taken three times daily in fully ambulatory patients with essential hypertension, outside hospital. During the first 24 h of treatment there was a reduction in daytime heart rate and a small reduction in daytime blood pressure. After 10 weeks treatment there was a more substantial fall in daytime blood pressure from the hour of waking, but no effect on sleeping nighttime blood pressure or heart rate. Twenty-four hour variation, as assessed by the amplitude of a fitted regression curve, showed a reduction in heart rate but not blood pressure variation. In 4 patients restudied after 11 weeks treatment with oxprenolol (tid) and cyclopenthiazide at 9 a.m. there was some evidence of an antihypertensive effect occuring during both the daytime and nighttime.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetotactic bacteria, in particular 2 morphological forms of magnetococci, are of common occurrence at the sediment/water interface of ponds, lakes and estuaries in the U.K. Photomicrography has demonstrated that the organisms have a highly ordered, helical flight path when exposed to the magnetic field of a bar magnet. In the earth's magnetic field, the helical characteristic of the flight path was evident, but the organisms failed to move in a straight path.
