    Notes: Abstract Angular distributions of fission products have been measured as a function of mass asymmetry in the odd-Z 237Np(α29 and 44 MeV,f) system using a recoil-catcher technique and off-line gamma spectrometry. Higher angular anisotropies were observed for the asymmetric mode products compared to the symmetric mode products at both energies. Average anisotropies for individual modes are lower than those for neighbouring even-even fissioning nucleus242Pu due to odd-nucleon spin effect. Present data have been analysed according to the transition state model assuming two modes of fission with characteristic saddle-shapes, barriers and multichance fission probabilities. It is seen that angular distributions for the symmetric and asymmetric modes are decided at and well past the corresponding saddle points respectively. Odd-nucleon spin contribution (〈k 2〉) to the tilting mode variance have been deduced. For (241)Am fission, 〈k 2〉 values for the asymmetric and symmetric modes are ≤ 14 and 〉 14 ħ2 respectively. The 〈k 2〉 value averaged over several nuclei from preactinide (201Ti) to actinide (248Cf) is 11.5 ± 4.2 ħ2. Average 〈k 2〉 value is in close agreement with the theoretical estimate.

    Notes: Abstract Excitation functions for the evaporation residues for the reactions12C+93Nb and16O+89Y in the projectile energy range of 4 to 6.5 MeV/amu have been measured using off-line gamma spectrometry. The excitation functions for neutron(xn), proton(pxn) and one alpha(αxn) emission channels are practically similar for both the reactions. However the products formed by two alpha(2αxn) emission show much higher cross sections in the12C+93Nb than the16O+89Y system. This has been explained in terms of the incomplete fusion process involving transfer of an alpha particle from the projectile to the target in the former case.

    Notes: Abstract Mass resolved fission fragment angular distribution was measured in the 28.5 MeV alpha induced fission of233U using recoil catcher technique and direct gamma spectrometry. The angular distribution of 8 fission products were obtained. The angular anisotropies of asymmetric fission products were found to be higher than those of symmetric products indicating a correlation between the fragment angular distribution and the mass distribution.

    Notes: Abstract Heavy ion activation of natural terbium foil with 75 MeV 12C6+ results in the formation of carrier-free lutetium isotopes, 165–167Lu, and their corresponding decay products, 165–167Yb and 165–167Tm, in the matrix. Carrier-free lutetium and ytterbium isotopes have been separated quantitatively from terbium bulk target matrix using HDEHP liquid cation exchanger. Radiochemically pure thulium radionuclides have been obtained after the decay of ytterbium radionuclides.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of chemical forms of iodine (I− and I2) on the uptake by wheat plant (Triticum aestivum) as a function of growth, in terms of days since germination, has been studied. The normalized amount on fresh weight basis of I− and I2 absorbed by root, shoot and plant as a whole was determined by independent experiments. Both chemical forms of iodine were tagged with131I for radiometric assay. The transport index, depletion factor and shoot to root ratios were determined. The total amount of iodine absorbed increases as a function of growth in case of both chemical forms; however, uptake and transportation of I− is greater as compared to I2.

    Notes: Abstract Elemental concentrations of a few medicinal leaves are determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis using the single comparator (k 0) method. Data obtained for neem leaves, collected from two different places, have been used to see the effect of soil condition. The applicability of the method particularly for the simultaneous determination of Ca, Mg, V and Al in biological matrices has been evaluated in terms of the detection limit, precision and accuracy. The method was validated by analysing the NIST Standard Reference Material (SRM-1571) and it was found that the elemental concentrations measured in SRM-1571 are within ±10% of the reported values.

    Notes: Abstract Present status of work on charge and mass distribution in medium energy fission of compound nuclei produced using various target projectile combinations is reviewed. Systematics of charge distribution parameters and their dependence on excitation energy of the fissioning nucleus is presented. Variation of mass distribution with excitation energy and mass and charge of the fissioning nucleus is discussed. Qualitative explanation of the data has been sought in terms of existing theories of fission. The importance of charge and mass distribution studies in identifying the different reaction mechanisms in heavy ion induced reaction is highlighted.

    Notes: Abstract Multielement analysis was carried out in two samples of natural rubies obtained from Kenya and Tanzania and a synthetic ruby obtained locally. The trace element profile was used to characterise the ruby samples. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) by the single comparator (K 0 method) was used to determine the concentrations of 22 elements with gold as the comparator. High resolution γ-ray spectrometry was employed for radiometric assay of the activation products. The accuracy and precision were evaluated by analysing standard reference materials such as USGS-W-1 and AGV-1 and were found to be satisfactory.

    Notes: Abstract Three ferromanganese crusts from different locations of the Indian Ocean were analysed by neutron activation analysis using thek 0 method (k 0 NAA method) for studying the distribution of some trace elements along with Fe and Mn. Another crust from the Lau basin of the Pacific Ocean was investigated for comparison of the influence of different oceanic conditions on the trace element distributions in ferromanganese crusts. Variation in Co concentration along with the Mn/Fe ratio were discussed in terms of the hydrogenous/hydrothermal nature of the crusts. The normalised REE content was used to identify possible anomalies. The observed Ce anomaly is discussed in the light of the depositional environment. The precision and accuracy of the method were confirmed by measuring the elemental concentrations in a USGS nodule standard NOD A-1.
