    Notes: Abstract The effect of the platinum particle size was investigated for the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of aqueous ethanol to ethanal at a temperature of 303 K, an ethanol concentration of 260 mol m−3, a partial oxygen pressure 60 kPa, a pH of 9, and an ethanal and ethanoate concentration of 20 mol m−3. A particle size effect on the turnover frequency was observed but only for particle sizes smaller than 2 nm. Hence, the reaction shows a limited structure sensitivity.

    Notes: Abstract The selective oxidation of aqueous ethanol by dioxygen over a platinum on carbon catalyst was investigated in a three-phase continuously stirred tank reactor at a total pressure of 600 kPa, a temperature of 323 K, a pH of 8.4, and a catalyst concentration of 2.3 kg m−3. Multiple steady-states were obtained by systematic changes in the start-up procedure and variation of the feed concentration of ethanol and partial oxygen pressure in the reactor. The ethanol feed concentration was varied from 100 to 2500 mol m−3 and the partial oxygen pressure from 8 to 120 kPa. On the time scale of the experiments, i.e. 21 ks, two steady-states of the net disappearance rate of ethanol are observed in the ethanol feed concentration range from 500 to 2500 mol m−3 at a partial oxygen pressure of 58 kPa and in the range of partial pressure of oxygen from 8 to 120 kPa at an ethanol feed concentration of 500 mol m−3. Three steady-states are observed in the feed ethanol concentration range from 200 to 400 mol m−3 and a partial oxygen pressure of 58 kPa.

    Notes: Abstract The partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas has been investigated by admitting pulses of pure methane, pure oxygen and mixtures of methane and oxygen to platinum sponge at temperatures ranging from 973 to 1073 K. On reduced platinum the decomposition of methane results in the formation of surface carbon and hydrogen. No deposition of carbon occurs during the interaction of methane with a partly oxidised catalyst. Oxygen is present in three different forms under the conditions studied: platinum oxide, dissolved oxygen and chemisorbed oxygen species. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen are produced directly from methane via oxygen present as platinum oxide. Activation of methane involving dissolved oxygen provides a parallel route to carbon dioxide and water. Both platinum oxide and chemisorbed oxygen species are involved in the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. In the presence of both methane and dioxygen at a stoichiometric feed ratio the dominant pathways are the direct formation of CO and H2 followed by their consecutive oxidation. A Mars-van Krevelen redox cycle is postulated for the partial oxidation of methane: the oxidation of methane is accompanied by the reduction of platinum oxide, which is reoxidised by incorporation of dioxygen into the catalyst.

    Notes: The oxidative coupling of methane was carried out in the absence of catalyst in a continuous flow setup at total pressures up to 1,000 kPa, temperatures from 950 to 1,230 K, and inlet molar ratios of CH4/O2 down to 2.5. At constant temperature and residence time, the conversions of methane and oxygen increase drastically with increasing pressure. At oxygen conversions higher than 80%, product selectivities are comparable at different pressures. The space-time yield of the C2 products reaches a level comparable to that required for industrial operations from 400 kPa on. A radical-reaction network consisting of 38 elementary reactions allows to describe the experimental data. To describe adequately the effect of total pressure, the pressure fall-off behavior of the rate coefficients for the unimolecular reactions in the network has to be taken into account explicitly.General features of the reaction mechanism do not depend on the total pressure. Methyl and hydrogen peroxy radicals are the most abundant radicals. The total pressure increase results in a drastic increase of the concentrations of the chain carriers, particularly the hydrogen peroxy radical. Higher pressure favor the oxidative route from ethane to ethylene compared to the pyrolytic route. Increasing the total pressure leads to an increase of the primary and a decrease of the consecutive CO formation relative to the coupling. The balance between these nonselective routes determines the effect of the total pressure on the integral selectivity to C2 products at different conversions. The major contribution to the integral CO selectivity comes from the oxidation of methyl radicals.

    Notes: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry have been used to characterize 4.9 wt.% platinum-on-graphite catalysts used for the oxidation with molecular oxygen of methyl α-D-glucoside in aqueous solution. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that a surface oxidic layer is formed on the platinum particles upon exposure to ambient air. This oxidation could not be confirmed by XPS, however. The oxidation of methyl α-D-glucoside in the liquid phase is accompanied by growth of the platinum particles. Open-circuit potential measurements indicated an increasing oxygen coverage of the platinum surface during reaction.
