    Notes: The distribution of adenylate cyclase in testis, by means of a specific substrate adenylyl-imidodiphosphate (AMP-PNP), has been determined. Membrane-associated reaction products, indicative of adenylate cyclase activity, are localized by a complete cytochemical medium (containing 10 mM NaF) at the level of the basal compartment of the seminiferous epithelium, on the basal surface of Sertoli cells, and on adjacent plasma membranes of Sertoli cells and spermatogonial cells. At the level of the adluminal compartment, reaction products were found on adjacent plasma membranes of Sertoli cells and early or elongated spermatids. Adenylate cyclase reaction products are detectable by a basal incubation medium (without 10 mM NaF) only in the adluminal compartment on the spermatid plasma membranes.

    Notes: The muscular system in the posterior sucker of Branchiobdella pentodonta Whit. has circular, longitudinal and radial fibers. In the anterior sucker, which has circular and longitudinal fibers, the muscle system is scarce. Concentric fibers are found around the mouth. In both suckers the glandular elements form voluminous complexes secreting mucus for attachment to the substrate. Suckers show neuromuscular junctions and three distinct types of neuroglandular junctions: one with typical neurosecretory granules, one with larger neurosecretory granules produced by cells located at the origin of the segmental nerves, and one with presynaptic vesicles. The second type is peculiar to the posterior sucker. A comparison is made between suckers of Branchiobdella and those of leeches.

    Notes: The surface receptors in Branchiobdella pentodonta consist of “sense buttons” prevalent on the prostomium, isolated sense cells all along the body of the animal, and free nerve endings. The “sense buttons” are uni- and multiciliated neurosensitive elements and supporting cells together with mucus glandular processes and muscle fibers. In the neurosensitive elements the cilia are always surrounded by cytoplasmic extroversion. The cytoplasm of the apical zone has abundant small dense granules, mitochondria, bands of tonofilaments, and microtubules. The cilium of uniciliated elements originates from three short roots. The highly vacuolated support cells surround the neurosensitive elements, separating them from each other. The “sense buttons” appear to be mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors, and the isolated sense cells tactile mechanoreceptors, as are the free nerve endings. The surface receptors are compared with those of other Oligochaeta and Hirudinea.

    Notes: The body of Branchiobdella pentodonta is uniformly covered with cuticular microvilli and abounds in sensory receptors. Muscle attachments are clearly visible both on the prostomium and trunk (11 segments). The mouth opening, oriented dorsally with respect to the adhesive sucker disk, possesses papillae with apical notches.On all trunk segments except the last three, which form the posterior sucker, mucous gland pores are evident. The nephridia open on the 3rd and 8th segments. On the more turgid sexual segments (5th, 6th, 7th) the spermathecal, atrial, and oviductal openings are seen. The 6th and 7th also contain the clitellum gland pores.The posterior sucker is delimited by a thick ring and the adhesive disk, and like the anterior disk is completely covered with the gland complex pores. The anal opening is on the 9th segment dorsal to the sucker. Based on these studies, we believe that the family Branchiobdellidae should be removed from the Oligochaeta and raised in rank to form a separate group.
