    Notes: Abstract The serotonin syndrome is frequently characterized by minor neurologic manifestations that regress rapidly (such as confusion, tremor, ...). Many medications including tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tryptophan and the association of monoamine oxidase inhibitors together with a serotoninergic agent have been implicated in this syndrome. In certain cases, and for poorly understood reasons, clinical manifestations can include circulatory collapse, malignant hyperthermia, convulsions and rhabdomyolysis. These forms are often fatal. Treatment, other than the withdrawal of the offending drug, is symptomatic. Dialysis may be of value in withdrawing the drug from the circulatory system. We report a patient with the serotonin syndrome of favorable outcome due to an overdose of moclobemide and clomipramine.

    Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of vinorelbine has been investigated by a new HPLC method in 8 cancer patients receiving 8 weekly doses (30 mg·m−2) administered by brief infusion (15 min). The plasma concentration-time curves showed a tri-exponential decay with a long terminal half-life (44.7 h) and a high volume of distribution (Vz=75.61·kg−1). The concentrations after the 8th infusion were significantly lower than after the 1st infusion, but without significant modification of CL (1.28 l·h−1·kg−1) or AUC (0.80 mg·l−1·h). The pharmacokinetic parameters exhibited wide inter-individual variations. The results are consistent with those of previous RIA studies, although the HPLC method appears to be more specific and more precise.

    Notes: Abstract  This study presents results from a downscaling simulation of the impact of a doubling of CO2 concentration. A multidecadal coupled simulation of a 1% per year increase of CO2 concentration with the Hadley Centre ocean-atmosphere model provides its sea-surface temperatures and deep soil climatological temperatures as a boundary condition to two 10-year integrations with a version of the ARPEGE-IFS atmosphere model. This global spectral model has a horizontal resolution varying between 60 km in the Mediterranean Sea and 700 km in the southern Pacific. The global impact as well as the regional impact over Europe in this time slice are examined and compared with results from other studies. Over Europe, our main focus, the model impact consists of a warming of about 2 °C, relatively uniform and with little seasonal dependence. There are precipitation increases of about 10% over the northern part in winter and spring, and 30% over the southern part in winter only. Precipitation decreases by 20% in the southern part in autumn. The day-to-day variability of the precipitation increases, except over the southern area in summer. No strong impact is found on the soil moisture. Budgets of physical fluxes are examined at the top of the atmosphere and at the land-atmosphere interface.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To develop a population pharmacokinetics of vinorelbine in a population of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients using a Bayesian estimation in order to calculate for any further patient, individual pharmacokinetic parameters from few blood samples. Methods: Vinorelbine was given by a 15-min infusion (30 mg · m−2) to eight patients with NSCLC. Its serum concentration was determined by HPLC and its pharmacokinetics was described by a three-compartment open model with elimination from the central compartment. Volume of the central compartment (V1) and rate constants (k10, k12, k21, k13, k31) were selected as population pharmacokinetic parameters and computed by non-linear regression (two-step approach) from 14 to 18 concentration measurements per course. Subsequently, these parameters were used by the Bayesian estimator to calculate individual pharmacokinetics from only 2 or 3 measured concentrations. Results: The population mean values (CV%) of V1, k10, k12, k21, k13, k31, CL, t 1/2 were respectively 21 l (55%), 3.2 h−1 (29%), 7.7 h−1 (74%), 1.3 h−1 (67%), 4.7 h−1 (53%), 0.04 h−1 (20%), 57 l · h−1 (31%) and 43 h (36%). The comparison of results obtained from the Bayesian estimator and from the three-compartment model showed that CL and t 1/2 were well predicted (relative deviation: ±12 to 22%) by the Bayesian method using only two blood samples. Conclusion: We demonstrated that Bayesian estimation allows, at minimal cost and minimal disturbance for the patient, the determination of several vinorelbine pharmacokinetic parameters and therefore dose adaptation from as few as two drug concentrations, measured at 6 h and 24 h after infusion.

    Notes: Summary The Iguanid lizard Liolaemus tenuis is shown to be a rock and trunk dweller (apparently preferring perches between 0–30 cm height) in a central Chilean locality where it coexists with a single ground-dwelling congener. In its southern distributional ranges L. tenuis is sympatric with another tree-dweller, L. pictus. Habitat shift is demonstrated in this latter case by L. tenuis concentrating on tree trunks, and at modal heights 30–60 cm. Liolaemus pictus occupies lower (apparently more favorable) perches, actively interferring with its congener.

    Notes: Summary We document activity field temperatures, daily activity patterns, and extent of thermoregulation in four species of Liolaemus lizards inhabiting at high altitude (above 3500 m) in the Andes of northern Chile. These four species have similar activity field temperature (Tb near 29°C) despite their being distributed at different altitudinal belts. However, conspicuous differences exist between higher-altitude (L. alticolor and L. jamesi) and lower-altitude (L. islugensis and L. ornatus) lizards regarding extent of thermoregulation and activity period. Some differences in morphology, behavior, and patterns of microhabitat occupancy are also apparent among these four species and are seemingly related to the thermal environment to which they are subjected. In comparison to eight low-altitude Liolaemus species in central Chile (Tb near 35°C) the four high-altitude species in northern Chile have lower activity field temperature. The latter is apparently due to the constraints imposed by the harsh Andean thermal environment, a hypothesis supported by the fact that high-altitude Liolaemus lizards under laboratory conditions demonstrate body temperatures that exceed by 5°C or more, those recorded in the field.

    Notes: Abstract Modifications to a standard biological water quality assessment method, used in Belgium since 1979, were studied. As a result, we recommend the following: - samples should be processed live - samples should not be washed through a series of sieves - systematic units represented by only one individual should be included in the calculation of the biotic index. Using this modification, the biotic index can be calculated more rapidly and shows a higher correlation with a chemical water quality assessment index.
