Notes: Summary A review of 116 cases of coexistent brain tumours and intracranial arterial aneurysms is made. The cases were collected from the literature, personal experience (8 cases) and different neurosurgical centres all over the world. According to the literature the general incidence of intracranial arterial aneurysms does not seem to be higher in brain tumours than in the general population. Our own material is not suitable to contribute to this question. Several factors may explain the presence of some intracranial arterial aneurysm accompanying different groups of brain tumours. Localization as well as local circulatory changes may be responsible for the higher incidence of intracranial arterial aneurysms, especially those located in the internal carotid artery group found associated with tumours at the base of the skull (basal meningiomas and pituitary adenomas). A high incidence of aneurysms of the middle cerebral artery group accompanying ipselateral tumours may be due to an increased regional blood flow, because of the vascularity of certain tumours. A dysgenetic factor might explain the high incidence of multiple aneurysms in meningiomas and other various tumours of congenital origin. Clinically the presenting symptomatology was mainly one of a space occupying lesion. From a therapeutic point of view a combined surgical approach to tumour and aneurysm is accompanied by better results in basal meningiomas and pituitary adenomas.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of ketotifen on the airway responses and the recruitment of the inflammatory cells into the airways of sensitized rats after antigen challenge. Twenty-five Brown Norway rats, 7–9 weeks old, were actively sensitized to ovalbumin (OA) (1 mg s.c.) andBordetella pertussis vaccine (109 bacilli i.p.) At 14 days after sensitization rats were anesthetized with urethane (1.1 g/kg i.p.) and intubated endotracheally. Aerosols of OA (5% W/V in saline for 5 min) were administered to control rats (Group A;n=9), to a low-dose ketotifen group (Group B; 1 mg/kg PO;n=8) and a high-dose ketotifen group (Group C; 10 mg/kg; PO for 10 days;n=9). Pulmonary resistance (R L) was measured at baseline, and every 15 min for up to 8 h after OA. The magnitude of the early response was 241±51% in A (% baselineR L; mean±SE), and significantly less in B (119±7%) and C (131±16%) (p〈0.01). The late response was significantly lower in C than A but not B. The total cell number in bronchoalveolar lavage at 8 h after OA challenge was significantly higher in A than B and C (p〈0.01). The lymphocyte and eosinophil counts were reduced in B and C compared to A (p〈0.05). A positive correlation was found between the late response and total number of cells recovered in the BAL (r=0.78) (p〈0.05). We conclude that ketotifen inhibited the early response and late response, and the influx of inflammatory cells into the airways after antigen challenge.

Notes: Abstract Apamin has been shown to antagonize the nonadrenergic, noncholinergic (NANC) inhibitory system in guinea pig taenia coli. We have examined the effects of apamin on the nonadrenergic noncholinergic inhibitory system and its putative transmitters in isolated guinea pig trachea. Electrical field stimulation (ES) of isolated trachea pretreated with atropine and propranolol evoked reproducible relaxations that were blocked by tetrodoxin, but were unaffected by apamin. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), adenosine (AD), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced concentration-dependent inhibition of histamine (H)-induced contractions of isolated trachea but the inhibitory actions of these agents were not significantly affected by apamin. In contrast, apamin virtually abolished ES-evoked relaxations in guinea pig isolated taenia caeci, and reduced the inhibition of H-induced contraction by ATP from 40% to 1%. We conclude that neither the NANC inhibitory system in the guinea pig trachea nor its putative mediators VIP, AD, and ATP are antagonized by apamin, in contrast to taenia caeci.

Notes: A numerical model is proposed to simulate the space-time behaviour of a low-density plasma in a linear multipole. Semi-discrete Galerkin techniques are used in conjunction with triangular finite elements. For both space and time discretizations, special techniques are developed to numerically separate the effect of rapid diffusion along the field lines from the slow perpendicular diffusion. Numerical results are exhibited to show how these techniques succeed in eliminating the problems caused by the strong anisotropy of the diffusion coefficient in the strongly curved and very inhomogeneous multipole configuration.

Notes: Polytetrafluoroethylene surfaces have been treated to reduce thrombogenicity in order to make them suitable for use in prosthetic devices that come in contact with blood. This was done by first etching the surface with potassium in liquid ammonia to produce double bonds and then using these double bonds as sites for grafting on polyacids or as sites for chemical reactions. Tubes so treated were tested for thrombo-genetic activity by implantation in the thoracic aorta or inferior vena cava of dogs. These tests showed that the thrombogenicity of a polytetrafluoroethylene surface can be reduced by attaching negatively charged groups provided the surface concentration of these groups is not too high (order of 1-2 × 10-6 equivalent per cm2 geometric area) and provided the distribution of these groups is uniform. Sulfonic acid groups obtained by chlorosulfonation and carboxyl groups attached by grafting tert-butyl crotonate and hydrolyzing to crotonic acid were effective. Long chains of poly(acrylic acid), poly-(ethylenesulfonic acid), and poly(vinyl alcohol) sulfate were less effective.
