Notes: Limited specific hydrolysis of zein by trypsin was used to produce 1.42%, 1.70%, and 1.87% hydrolysates (percentage of peptide bonds cleaved), containing three to four polypeptides (by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC)) ranging in size from ∼16,000 to 3,500 daltons. The mixtures of polypeptides had substantially increased solubilities at pH below 11, including at the isoelectric point of zein (pH 6–7). In general, the emulsifying activity index was less for the hydrolysates than for native zein; the emulsion stability was higher for the 1.70% hydrolysate than was the emulsion of native zein only at pH above 8. At lower pHs, the stability of the emulsions was similar for all samples. The foamability (% overrun) of the hydrolysates was higher than for native zein; the foam stability was higher for the 1.87% hydrolysate than for the other hydrolysates. Phosphorylation and deamidation of the hydrolysates markedly increased the water solubility in the pH range from 4 to 10. Chemical modification of the native zein improved the solubility at pH 2 to 9 after phosphorylation and pH 6 to 11 after deamidation as compared to the native protein. In general, the emulsifying activity index, as well as its stability, was less for the phosphorylated and deamidated hydrolysates than for native zein but the emulsifying activity index of deamidated native zein was higher at pH 7 to 11. Foaming activity and stability of chemically modified hydrolysates were similar to the 1.87% hydrolysate.

Notes: Summary The PHA-responsiveness in cell-culture of mononuclear cells obtained in acute leukemia from different sources, such as blood, bone marrow, lymph-nodes, leukemic pleural effusion and spinal fluid were investigated. The peripheral blood lymphocytes of all but 2 of 28 untreated patients showed extents of blastogenesis from 48 to 90%. The bone-marrow cells of 18 of the 28 patients gave high extents of blast-like cells (52 to 88%) in 5. In fact, the marrow cells of 9 patients showed blast extents only from 1 to 14%, whereas the remaining 4 patients had no marrow-cell transformation at all. Also the lymphocytes from lymph-nodes of 2 patients show low extents of blastogenesis (8.5–12.3%). Again, the mononuclear cells obtained from the spinal fluid in 7 patients affected by meningeal leukemia, and from the pleural effusion in 1 patient did not undergo any blastic transformation. The question arises whether the PHA-responsive cells from the acute leukemia peripheral blood are normal immuno-competent lymphocytes circulating in the blood, independent from the cell type of leukemia. As a consequence, it comes up whether the bone-marrow cells are PHA-responsive in the lymphocytic type of acute leukemia and PHA-nonresponsive in other cell-types of leukemia (myelo-monocytic). Thus, the PHA-cell culture of both the peripheral blood and the bone-marrow cells could aid in recognizing the cell types of leukemia one is dealing with.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The A. considers the problem of toxic side-effects caused by daunomycin in children, suffering from leukaemia or other neoplastic diseases. Several factors, such as age, general conditions, type and stage of the disease, previous antiblastic treatment, interfere in the tolerance of the drug. In children the more frequent toxic effects caused by daunomycin are bone marrow insufficiency and mucositis; cardiac complications are seen very rarely, only when the total dose of the drug exceeds 25 mg/kg. Depression of the lymphocyte immunologic competence can facilitate both tumor enhancement and infections. The A. reports briefly three investigations, done in order to explore the behaviour of the immunopoietic system of the child during treatment with daunomycin, and a chromosome analysis of peripheral blood and bone marrow.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract The spleen is the least common intra-abdominal site for the development of cystic disease. A lymphangioma of the spleen was first reported in 1885 by Fink; since that time 47 cases of lymphangioma or lymphangectasia have been reported. Up to now, no CT study has been published. This report concerns a case of cystic lymphangioma of the spleen consisting of a large splenic cyst with associated multiple small subcapsular cysts and lymphangectasia. The utility of CT in diagnosis is presented.

Notes: Abstract The goals of the evaluation of the R & D programmes of the Commission of the European Communities is to assess, beside scientific and technical achievements, the added value due to the implementation of these activities at European level. This requires the development of techniques different from those normally used for the measurement of scientific output. In particular a number of indicators have been developed to assess international cooperation promoted by EC programmes and the resulting economic and industrial impact.

Notes: Abstract An indicator was developed to analyze the distribution of EC support to research projects in the less favoured peripheral regions of Europe, compared to support in the economically stronger core regions. For this purpose it was assumed that in theory EC research funds and contracts would tend, on average, to be allocated according to the scientific potential of each country or region. An R & D activity is considered to contribute to socio-economic cohesion if the share obtained by the less favoured regions is larger than their share of the total European scientific potential. This assessment was made both for the total of all R & D activities and for each specific research programme. It emerges that the requirement for high scientific standards is not an obstacle to the participation of less favoured regions in Community research.
