Notes: Abstract We describe the design and implementation of a workbench for computational geometry. We discuss issues arising from this implementation, including comparisons of different algorithms for constant factors, code size, and ease of implementation. The workbench is not just a library of computational geometry algorithms and data structures, but is designed as a geometrical programming environment, providing tools for: creating, editing, and manipulating geometric objects; demonstrating and animating geometric algorithms; and, most importantly, for implementing and maintaining complex geometric algorithms.

Notes: Abstract Benthic and pelagic fishes were sampled east of Maria Island, Tasmania, at two-monthly intervals from April 1984 to June 1985, from the surface to the bottom (500 m depth), using commercial-sized trawls. Biomass was calculated by the “area swept/volume filtered” method and divided by estimated catchability coefficients so that catches from the two sampling gears could be combined. Of the 54 families caught, three (Myctophidae, Squalidae, Sternoptychidae) contributed 25% of the 115 species. Most benthic and dispersed species were caught regularly, whereas most pelagic species occurred only occasionally and in low numbers, although a core group was always present. Total fish biomass was high (range=77 to 532 g m-2; x= 390 g m-2), due almost entirely to the myctophid Lampanyctodes hectoris (over 90% of the biomass). Benthic biomass was relatively low and stable, but derived from many species. Pelagic biomass was high, fluctuated widely and was composed of a few species. Biomass was highest in summer: Maurolicus muelleri increased by a factor of 200, Diaphus danae by 50, and L. hectoris, Macruronus novaezelandiae and Lepidorhynchus denticulatus by almost 10. Peaks in biomass may correlate with the interactions of the subtropical convergence and the East Australian Current and the resultant marked seasonal cycle in water temperature, nutrients and primary productivity.

Notes: Abstract The only species of fission yeasts capable of growing on glycerol or dihydroxyacetone were Schizosaccharomyces pombe and S. malidevorans. When growing on glycerol or grown on glucose until it was exhausted, these species contained glycerol:NAD+ 2-oxidoreductase and dihydroxyacetone kinase but no glycerol kinase, consistent with utilization of glycerol via dihydroxyacetone. When grown to exhaustion of glucose, S. octosporus, S. slooffiae and S. japonicus contained dihydroxyacetone kinase but no glycerol:NAD+ 2-oxidoreductase or glycerol kinase. Prior to exhaustion of glucose in the medium, all species contained dihydroxyacetone kinase, all species except S. japonicus contained glycerol:NADP+ 2-oxidoreductase, and only S. pombe and S. malidevorans contained glycerol:NAD+ 2-oxidoreductase. Possible roles for the glycerol:NAD+ 2-oxidoreductase, glycerol:NADP+ 2-oxidoreductase and dihydroxyacetone kinase in metabolism of glycerol and dihydroxyacetone are discussed.

Notes: Summary Acetylcholinesterase is released from substantia nigra neurons, independently of cholinergic transmission. In an attempt to discover the functional significance of this phenomenon, the behavioural effects of injecting acetylcholinesterase into one substantia nigra of the rat were investigated. Following a single injection of the enzyme, intraperitoneal amphetamine evoked circling behaviour in a direction away from the side of injection. Purified acetylcholinesterase with a similar electrophoretic mobility to the endogenous secreted form, was far more potent in eliciting circling than much higher activities of commercial enzyme, consisting of several molecular species of acetylcholinesterase. Similar infusions of butyrylcholinesterase did not induce circling. Depending upon the amount of enzyme initially given, the behavioural effects of a single injection of acetylcholinesterase persisted for up to thirty days. During this period apomorphine, administered systemically, induced transient circling towards the acetylcholinesterase-treated side. It is concluded that secreted acetylcholinesterase has a functional significance within the substantia nigra, independent of cholinergic transmission. This released enzyme could exert long-term changes in the activity of the nigrostriatal system, involving modification of dopamine striatal receptors.

Notes: Summary Corticopontine projection patterns were studied after injections of an 3H-leucine and 3H-proline mixture into each of four distinct cortical fields within the inferior parietal lobule and dorsal prelunate gyrus. Different preferential patterns of pontine labeling were observed for each of the four cortical areas studied. Multiple injections across the dorsal aspect of the prelunate gyrus (area DP) yielded scattered patches of label limited to the dorsolateral pontine nuclear region. A single injection within the lateral intraparietal area (area LIP), located in the caudal portion of the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus resulted in a series of labeled patches across the dorsal tier of cells stretching across the dorsal portions of the dorsolateral, peduncular and dorsal pontine nuclei. Injection of the cortex on the caudal aspect of the inferior parietal convexity (area 7a) produced multiple patches of label along the lateral margin of the ventral, lateral, and dorsolateral nuclei. Injection of area 7b resulted in label along the lateral aspects of the ventral, lateral and dorsolateral nuclei, as seen with area 7a injections, as well as additional label in the ventromedial portions of the ventral, peduncular and paramedian pontine nuclei. These results provide supporting anatomic evidence for the functional subdivision of the inferior parietal lobule and dorsal aspect of the prelunate gyrus and provide new information about the organization of cortical projections to the primate pontine nuclei.

Notes: Summary After screening two local populations in the northern part of The Netherlands for hypertension, patients with a diastolic pressure (DP) between 95 and 120 mmHg were treated daily either with 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide or 100 mg atenolol. Non-responders were given the combination and if necessary the dose of atenolol was increased to 200 mg. Non-responders to the latter combination were randomized and treated either with 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide and labetalol or with 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide, 200 mg atenolol and prazosin. If after 1 month a DP≤90 mmHg had been reached the patient was reassessed after a further 3 months. If a DP〉90 mmHg was found the dose of labetalol or prazosin was increased and the patient was re-examined after 1 month. This protocol was followed until the maximum dose was reached or adverse reactions prevented a further increase in dosage. During 6 months of treatment there was a further drop in systolic and diastolic blood pressures under both regimens of, respectively, 8.6 and 2.4 mmHg for labetalol, and 7.7 and 5.0 mmHg for the prazosin group. At the end of the period the average daily doses of labetalol and prazosin were 1256 mg and 4.3 mg, respectively. There was no significant difference in the average number of complaints between the labetalol and the prazosin group.

Notes: Summary After screening a local population in the northern part of The Netherlands for hypertension, 59 patients with a diastolic pressure (DP) between 95 and 130 mmHg were randomized and treated either with 50 mg atenolol (n=29) or 100 mg atenolol (n=30) for 1 month. There was no significant difference between the two treatments, neither in the fall in systolic and diastolic pressures nor in the number of complaints reported. It is concluded that in the initial treatment of uncomplicated mild to moderate hypertension, 100 mg atenolol has no advantage over a 50 mg dose.

Notes: Summary In a randomised cross-over trial the combination labetalol/hydrochlorothiazide was compared with the combination of propranolol/hydralazine/hydrochlorothiazide in 34 uncomplicated hypertensive patients, who were not satisfactorily controlled with hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg alone. The elevated diastolic pressure (D.P.) in 27 patients responded satisfactorily to the labetalol schedule and in 28 patients to the propranolol/hydralazine schedule. No difference was found in the rate of decrease of D.P., nor in the disappearance of hypertension — related complaints. Although the duration of the washout between treatments was at least one month, treatment was significantly more efficacious during the second period. Labetalol pre-treatment especially seemed to enhance the effect of subsequent propranolol/hydralazine administration. Side effects due to therapy were rare and were not related to any particular treatment. The median daily dose of labetalol in responders was 600 mg and that of propranolol/hydralazine 120/60 mg (in both therapies hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg was given in addition). Patients showed a slight preference for the labetaol medication. It is concluded that labetalol/hydrochlorothiazide and propranolol/hydralazine/hydrochlorothiazide are equally satisfactory in the treatment of uncomplicated hypertension.
