    Notes: A stereoscopic microscope has been used in combination with the body of a 35 mm camera to obtain stereophotographs, at scales up to 6:1, of objects only a few millimetres in size. Subsequent stereocomparator observations have been used to deduce height differences on the objects 10 a precision, for the mean of five sets of readings, of ±0.01 mm for closely spaced points. Using more widely separated points, the precision was estimated to be ± 0.05 mm. Depths were computed using × parallaxes after a number of parameters were fixed by calibration. The large convergence angle of the microscope axes was a crucial parameter; rotations about the camera axis were found to be significant variables.

    Notes: A 2-year clinical trial of a composite laminate veneer system for masking discoloration or hypoplasia on the anterior teeth of patients has been undertaken. Three hundred and twenty restorations were placed in seventy-nine patients, of these 273 restorations in sixty-eight patients have been followed over a 2-year period. The technique produced an acceptable improvement in the aesthetics of the patients in the trial. However, the veneers were susceptible to chipping (52% of lateral incisor veneers and 79% of central incisor and canine veneers showed some evidence of material loss after 2 years) and marginal staining (75% of veneers showed some evidence of marginal staining after 2 years) during function. The veneer restorations had a deleterious affect upon the gingival health of the teeth on which they were placed.

    Notes: summary Thermal changes occurring during the setting of restorative materials have been measured accurately using a differential scanning calorimeter. The results were used to evaluate setting characteristics. The heat of reaction and rate of heat output may be significant in determining thermal damage to the pulp. The heat capacity is related to thermal insulation properties. These properties have been determined and their effect on the efficacy of restorative materials discussed.

    Notes: A series of investigations have been performed to study some factors influencing the tensile bond strength of glass polyalkenoate cements to dentine. The measured bond strength was affected by the method of storage of the teeth prior to testing, the nature of the dentine and the type of cement used for the tests. The most consistent results for bond strength measurements were obtained with teeth stored in neutral buffered formalin for more than 1 month after extraction, and then stored in distilled water for 4 weeks prior to bond strength determinations. The mean value obtained with this storage regime (1·62 MPa) was not different from that obtained using freshly extracted teeth (1·74 MPa). The bond strength to deciduous dentine (0·72 MPa) was significantly less than that to permanent dentine (1·62 MPa). There were significant differences between the measured bond strengths of the three materials tested, with Ketac-Fil giving the lowest result (1·62 MPa), then Ketac-Silver (2·41 MPa), ChemFil II formed the strongest bonds (4·65 MPa).

    Notes: An accurate method of determining the coefficient of thermal expansion of restorative materials has been devised and found to be suitable for routine testing. It is suggested that this method could be adapted for standard specification tests.The method is independent of sample shape and regularity. Values of coefficient of thermal expansion for several anterior restorative materials are presented. The importance of realistic conditions for sample treatment is discussed.

    Notes: An analysis of five proprietary acrylic soft lining materials revealed that they can be classified into two groups. The first of these groups (Soft Oryl and Coe Soft) resemble the tissue conditioners in composition in that their liquid component contains no monomer. A study of their mechanical properties may reveal that these materials should, in fact, be classified as tissue conditioners.The second group (including Palasiv, Virina and Coe Super Soft) were more conventional acrylic materials which differed in the amount of plasticizer and the type of acrylic monomer used in the liquid component and in the nature of the polymer component.

    Notes: The presence of thermal transitions within the working range of denture base polymers may have a drastic effect on the dimensional stability of the material. The glass transition temperatures of fifteen denture base polymers have been measured and their significance discussed. The effect of thermal contraction and polymerization contraction on dimensional stability is not fully understood at the present time. An attempt has been made to explain the dimensional changes which occur in denture bases with the aid of transition temperatures and inferred thermal contraction and polymerization contraction values.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between structure and mechanical properties for dental composites has often proved difficult to determine due to the use of commercially available materials having a number of differences in composition i.e. different type of resin, different type of filler, etc. This makes a scientific study of any one variable such as filler content difficult if not impossible. In the current study it was the aim to test the hypothesis that hardness measurements of dental composites could be used to monitor the status of the resin–filler interface and to determine the efficacy of any particle silanation process. Ten model composites formulated from a single batch of resin and containing a common type of glass filler were formulated to contain varying amounts of filler. Some materials contained silanated filler, others contained unsilanated filler. Specimens were prepared and stored in water and hardness (Vickers') was determined at 24 h using loads of 50, 100, 200 and 300 g. Composites containing silanated fillers were significantly harder than materials containing unsilanated fillers. For unsilanated products hardness was independent of applied load and in this respect they behaved like homogeneous materials. For composites containing silanated fillers there was a marked increase in measured hardness as applied load was increased. This suggests that the hardness–load profile could be used to monitor the status of the resin–filler interface. ©1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers
