Notes: Summary: A spontaneous inflammatory disease in rats transgenic for HLAB27 resembles the B27-associated human spondyloarthropathies, Colitis and arthritis, the two most important features, require T cells, gut bacteria, and high expression of B27 in bone marrow-derived cells, Control rats with HLA-B7 remain healthy. Most rats with HLA-Cw6 (associated with psoriasis vulgaris) remain healthy; a minority develop mild and transient disease. Rats with a mutant B27 with a Cys67←Ser substitution resemble wild-type B27 transgenics, but with a lower prevalence of arthritis. A similar phenotype is seen in B2 7 rats co-expressing a viral peptide that binds B27. Disease-prone LEW but not F344 B27 rats develop high serum IgA levels concurrent with disease progression. Colitis is associated with high interferon-y, arthritis with high interleukin-6. Disease is similar in B27 LEW, F344, and PVG rats, but the DA background is protective. Conclusions: The spondyloarthropathy-like disease in rats is specific for HLA-B27 but does not require Cys67. Arthritis but not colitis is particularly sensitive to B27 peptide-binding specificity. Genetic background exerts a strong influence, but some phenotypic differences exist between permissive strains that do not influence disease susceptibility The data favor a role for B27 peptide presentation in arthritis, but other mechanisms to explain the role of B27 have not been excluded.

Notes: Abstract Using data on 4726 cases of uveal melanoma collected by the Registry, of Ophthalmic Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, my co-workers and I have been studying the biology of haematogenous metastasis. We have developed methods for evaluating separately the relationships between prognostic factors and cure-rate and median survival time for uncured patients. We have discovered that size of the tumour and size of the largest nucleoli in the cells of the uveal melanomas related equally to cure-rate and median survival time. The presence of Callender's epitheloid-type cells in the tumour and increased patient age had little effect on cure-rate but dramatically reduced the median survival time.

Notes: Abstract In less than a decade, infrared “array” detectors have revolutionized infrared astronomy. Most of us remember using single element photometers in the early eighties, yet today, most of us are using 256×256 pixel arrays. At this meeting we have heard of plans to fabricate 1024×1024 arrays in the near infrared. From one to one million pixels in such a short period of time is amazing. The new array technology has also stimulated the development of many varieties of infrared cameras and spectrometers. At the UCLA Infrared Imaging Detector Lab we have commissioned two near infrared imaging systems (KCam and Gemini) based on 256×256 arrays and a spectrometer design study is in progress for 1024×1024 arrays. Performance of these cameras on the telescope will be reported briefly.

Notes: Summary The pump-leak system of movement of ions in and out of the lens is described in terms of the parameters governing active transport and passive diffusion across membranes. The relation between the transfer coefficient of the pump and the concentration of the ion being transported (substrate) and inhibitor ion is derived from Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The leak is described in terms of the electrochemical gradient and permeability characteristics of the lens membrane. A method is outlined whereby these relationships can be used to interpret data from lens culture experiments in terms of the various parameters of the pump and leak.

Notes: Abstract Lens-induced uveitis or phacoanaphylactic endophthalmitis (PE) is a chronic endophthalmitis with a zonal granulomatous inflammation surrounding a ruptured lens. One hundred forty four cases of PE were retrospectively evaluated clinically and histopathologically. The disease was not well recognized clinically as only six of the cases were given the clinical diagnosis of PE. Most cases (80%) occurred after trauma, surgical or non-surgical. The time after injury varied from two days to fifty nine years. Of those individuals less than 55 years of age who had no history of trauma, 29% were noted by clinical history to have microphthalmia. Although classically the inflammation of PE has been described as being confined to the anterior aspect of the eye, the choroid was involved with an inflammatory reaction in 76% of the cases.

Notes: Abstract One hundred cases of clinically acceptable sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) were evaluated histologically to determine the incidence of atypical features and correlate them with the severity of choroidal inflammation. The inflammatory response in the choroid varied from a focal non-granulomatous to a diffuse non-necrotizing granulomatous process. The choriocapillaris was focally involved rather frequently (in 40% of the cases). This was associated with severe inflammation. Chorioretinal adhesions were noted in 7% of the cases. Retinal detachment was observed in 50% of the cases, and this was associated with severe uveal inflammation. Fifty percent of the cases showed retinal perivasculitis and 18% a mild inflammatory infiltrate of the retina. Involvement of the meninges (a finding present in 22% of the cases) and severe inflammation in the scleral canals were both related to the severity of choroidal inflammation. Lens-induced endophthalmitis was observed in 14 cases and was not associated with the severity of the choroidal inflammation. Our observations indicate that the changes interpreted as atypical in SO are usually associated with severe choroidal inflammation, suggesting that these features may be the response to high doses of the antigenic agent. The classical histopathologic description of SO may represent only one manifestation of the pathologic response of this disease.
