Notizen: : The design and implementation of a national surface water quality monitoring network for New Zealand are described. Some of the lessons learned from the first year of operation are also addressed. Underpinning the design, and specified in advance, are the goal and objectives, the data quality assurance system, and the mechanism for data interpretation and reporting. Because of the difficulties associated with the use of a multitude of different agencies, only one agency is involved in field work and one laboratory undertakes the analysis. Staff training has been given a high priority. The network has been designed to give good trend detectability for regular sampling over a 5–10 year period.

Notizen: The incidence of salmonellae in 25 turkey flocks of hens, toms and broilers entering a processing plant was investigated by representative sampling of cecae and intestines in each flock. Considerable flock to flock variability was found (0-72%) with one-third of the flocks having greater than 10% infection. Variability between flocks from different growers and among flocks from each grower was evident. Certain growers were found to repeatedly ship salmonellae-infected flocks. There was no difference in the infection levels between the different bird types and the season effect was not significant. This study has shown that it is possible to pinpoint specific salmonellae-infected flocks that may be contributing to the dissemination of salmonellae in the plant.

Notizen: Abstract A method for estimating sample size which does not require an a priori definition of desired precision, or the assumption that the population is normally distributed with constant variance, has recently been proposed. This paper discusses this method and presents five modifications which make the method easier to use and reduce the probability of estimating a larger sample size than is actually required. The method is extended and used to estimate the mean abundance of patchily distributed benthic organisms. The technique can be used to guide the design of any environmental sampling programme, be it physical, chemical or biological, where comparisons between times and/or locations are required. Trade-offs between numbers of replicates and numbers of levels/sites are discussed.
