Notes: Abstract Oxide layers have been grown on Fe-9% Cr, Fe-9% Cr-0.3% Si, and Fe 9% Cr-0.6% Si alloys in carbon dioxide at 853 °K. It is known that such oxides are duplex, the outer layer being magnetite, formed by iron transport. The inner layer is Fe-Cr spinel but little is known about its growth mechanism so this has been investigated using oxygen-18 as a tracer. Oxides were grown first in C16O2 and then in C18O2 and the distribution of oxygen-18 in the scale measured using nuclear techniques. For all the alloys used, significant amounts of oxygen-18 were observed within the inner layer in addition to growth of18O-rich magnetite at the outer surface. The two possibilities of the oxygen-18 being present as a consequence of isotopic exchange or because new oxide had formed within the spinel layer are discussed. Our conclusion is that it is very unlikely that significant isotopic exchange had occurred in any part of the scale, and we deduce that at least a substantial amount of the oxygen-18 in the inner layer was deposited as a result of new oxide formation within that layer. The results also indicate that the location of growth sites within the inner layer differed between the alloys.

Notes: The technological importance of the high temperature corrosion behaviour of metals in gases with a low oxygen potential and containing other oxidants is outlined. This indicates the wide interest in the role of sulphur and also chlorine compounds, their aggressiveness being such in low oxygen potentials that serious corrosion rates can occur even below 400°C. The scientific basis of our understanding of corrosion in such atmospheres is discussed, and applied to the case of corrosion in sub-stoichiometric combustion products in pulverized coal boilers.

Notes: Continuous thermogravimetry is a common method to test materials in gaseous corrosive environments at high temperatures and to elucidate kinetics and mechanisms of high temperature corrosion. Recommendations how to conduct thermogravimetric tests are collected here, points to be considered including sample size and form, surface preparation, reaction chamber, starting procedure, sensitive measurements, gas supply and dosing. This study is meant as a starting foundation for establishing guidelines in high temperature corrosion research.

Notes: This paper briefly reviews CEGB fireside corrosion experience. It first summarises the numbers and operating conditions of the plants, and indicates the range of materials used in the boilers. Experience of furnace wall and superheater/reheater corrosion in coal fired plant is summarised, emphasising the need to “control” fireside corrosion rather than being able to eliminate it, and the importance of more corrosion resistant materials, particularly as coextruded tube. Tube life prediction techniques in use by the CEGB are outlined, and three current areas of research are described.

Notes: The paper reviews the development of modern continuous corrosion surveillance technology during the past twelve years. Although originally developed to investigate corrosion behaviour in dry flue gas systems, the approach has found increasing use in other fields. Several recent applications in American flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems have confirmed its usefulness for the power generation industry. The paper presents a description of the instrumentation and reviews laboratory and in-plant applications experience. The potential for future use to control corrosion and mitigate its effects in power generation and airpollution control systems is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The variation of electrical resistivity with temperature has been measured for four castable zirconias: 6.0 mole % calcia-stabilised, 8.5 mole % yttria-stabilised, and 25 and 50 mole % ceria-stabilised zirconia. The calcia-and yttria-stabilised castables need to be sintered at over 2000° K to develop their electrical conductivity fully, but that of the ceria-stabilised castables is independent of sintering temperature, and is similar to that of normally prepared ceramic. The castables are discussed with particular reference to their possible application as M H D electrode materials.
