Summary The application of finite difference methods to elliptic boundary value problems of the first kind results in a system of difference equations. We considerEuler equations which are connected with a definite variational problem. In this case it is possible to establish finite difference equations with a symmetric and positive definiteJacobian. Furthermore the spectral norm of the inverse matrix is bounded independently of the netspacing. The above mentioned properties of theJacobian allow to solve the system of difference equations by the iterative scheme SOR. To become more specific we treat the differential equation of minimal surfaces. For this example the resultant difference equations and the iteration method is considered in detail.

Zusammenfassung Durch Diskretisierung entsteht aus einem Randwertproblem erster Art einer elliptischen Differentialgleichung ein endliches Gleichungssystem. Bei Differentialgleichungen, dieEulersche Gleichungen eines definiten Variationsproblems sind, kann man so vorgehen, daß die Funktionalmatrix der Differenzengleichungen symmetrisch und positiv definit ist. Darüber hinaus gilt: Die Spektralnorm der inversen Matrix ist unabhängig von dem Abstand der Gitterpunkte beschränkt. Die genannten Eigenschaften der Funktionalmatrix erlauben es, zur Auflösung der Differenzengleichungen das Iterationsverfahren SOR zu benutzen. Die Diskretisierung und das Iterationsverfahren werden am Beispiel der Differentialgleichung der Minimalflächen im Detail erläutert.
