Description / Table of Contents: Contents The magnetic field of a direct-current loop of arbitrary shape in the presence of two highly permeable spheres is calculated. In the method described, a small element of the loop is imaged by the spheres. This allows for a threedimensional vector calculation of the scalar potential and the vector potential. As a practical example to the derived laws, the axially symmetrical field of a circular loop in front of two highly permeable spheres is calculated, and the lines of the magnetic induction are mapped.

Notes: Summary Using an immunoperoxidase (skin biopsy) and an immunofluorescence (peripheral blood, bone marrow punctate) technique, and monoclonal antibodies raised against peripheral mature lymphocytes, T helper subsets, T suppressor subsets, and Langerhans cells, we found a predominant dermal infiltration with lymphocytes of the suppressor phenotype and a predominant epidermal infiltration with Langerhans cells in a patient with Sézary syndrome (cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, CTCL). Repeated peripheral blood examinations showed an increased percentage of lymphocytes of the helper phenotype. A bone marrow examination revealed a ratio of suppressor/helper subsets of 1:4. The findings in the skin seem to be inconsistent with most of the results of previous studies in patients with CTCL; the significance of these findings is discussed.

Notes: Summary In an open prospective observational study, all patients presenting with abdominal wall hernias since January 1996 underwent polypropylene mesh repair. The patient population comprised 15 male and 22 female patients (aged 24 to 86 years, median 60.5 years) with 22 primary and 4 recurrent incisional hernias and 8 primary and 3 recurrent umbilical hernias, respectively. Premusculo-fascial mesh onlay followed direct apposition of the myoaponeurotic hernial rim in 24 patients and was fixed ≪tension free≫ bridging the defect with hernial sac interposition in 13 patients. In 2 patients subcutaneous wound sepsis, and in one skin- and subcutaneous slough, necessitated debridement and open wound treatment with subsequent uneventful secondary wound healing. 31 patients followed up for more than 6 months were assessed clinically and sonographically in October 1998 [8 patients after 8 months (range 6–9) and 23 patients after 19 months (range 12–33)]. The main complaint was neuralgiform pain at the mesh periphery in 8 patients. No recurrence was observed.

Notes: Optical excitation in a strongly neutral quasi-one-dimensional mixed-stack charge-transfer solid results in an exciton state, in which the electron and the hole are bound by electrostatic Coulomb interactions that are large compared to the one-electron hopping. We present a joint theoretical–experimental demonstration of a new class of collective excitations, multiexcitons or exciton strings, consisting of a string of several (more than two) bound excitons, in a prototype neutral charge-transfer solid. The stability of the multiexciton states arise from the combined effects of one dimensionality and strong Coulomb interactions. Theoretically, we show that in narrow band one-dimensional semiconductors with long range Coulomb interactions, the occurrence of stable 2-exciton string (biexciton) necessarily implies stable higher multiexcitons. Experimentally, evidence for the multiexciton strings is demonstrated by femtosecond pump–probe spectroscopy of anthracene pyromellitic acid dianhydride. Excellent qualitative agreement is found between the calculated and the measured differential transmission spectra. Photoinduced absorptions to the 2-exciton string at low pump intensity and to the 3-exciton string at high pump intensity are observed, in agreement with the theory of excited state absorption. The 2-exciton string is confirmed also by a direct two-photon absorption measurement. The binding energies of the 2-exciton and the 3-exciton strings are obtained from the experimental data. The larger binding energy of the 3-exciton is in agreement with theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the previous paper we demonstrated novel multiexcitons in a neutral mixed-stack charge-transfer solid. The lowest multiexciton, the biexciton, has recently been of interest also in the context of quasi-one-dimensional organic materials that are different from the mixed-stack solids. The nature and strength of the optical transition from the exciton to the two-exciton states is of importance in understanding photoinduced absorption as well as two-photon absorption. We show that within the diverse theoretical models that describe these different classes of materials, the excited state absorption from the optical exciton to the two-exciton states changes in a fundamental way upon the formation of the biexciton. The identical nature of the exciton absorption within these models is a consequence of one dimensionality. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Gain for less than one picosecond is observed in a type II GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well and compared to a type I multiple quantum well under the same conditions. A sophisticated three-beam experiment is used to unambiguously determine the internal gain of the samples. This method is capable of measuring very small amounts of gain and applicable to a wide variety of situations. The observations are well explained by a simple carrier scattering model. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate lasing action in a novel microcavity laser device based on vertical cavity surface-emitting laser technology. This laser can be used for intracavity spectroscopy, high contrast imaging of small (10 μm) structures, and is well suited for use in micro-optical mechanical systems for analysis of particles or fluids. Here, we investigate spectra of intracavity polystyrene spheres. Lasing threshold, single-mode operation, and multimode operation are all studied. Transverse mode separation in the multimode regime is found to be effective for sizing of the spheres.

Notes: Picosecond photoinduced absorption measurements have been performed on four different (AlxGa1−x)0.5In0.5P fractal quantum well heterostructures. The results of these measurements reveal that, at early times following pulsed excitation, the carriers remain near the surface layer in which they were photogenerated, and populate the higher lying branches of the V-shaped fractal structure. With increasing time, the carrier population relaxes toward the lowest energy, central wall. The rate at which the relaxation occurs is governed by the characteristic layer of widths of the fractal structure.

Notes: We have performed low-temperature femtosecond pump and probe experiments on GaAs/AlAs type II and GaAs/AlGaAs type I multiple quantum wells of similar well sizes. The measurements are analyzed using a many-body theory appropriate for both types of systems. It is found that the type I and type II nonlinearities are very similar at early times after excitation. However, the very fast (〈1 ps) Γ to X electron scattering in the type II samples causes pronounced differences at later times, allowing the observation of hole relaxation in the type II samples.
