Notes: The probability density pN of the product of N statistically independent (and identically distributed, each with probability density p1) elements of a group is studied in the limit N→∞. It is shown, for the compact groups R(2) and R(3), that pN→1 as N→∞, independently of p1. It is made plausible that a similar behavior is to be expected for other compact groups. For noncompact groups, the case of SU(1,1)which is of interest to the physics of disordered conductors, is studied. The case in which p1 is isotropic, i.e., independent of the phases, is analyzed in detail. When p1 is fixed and N(very-much-greater-than)1, a Gaussian distribution in the appropriate variable is found. When the original variables are rescaled by 1/N and the limit N→∞ is taken, keeping the ratio of the length of the conductor to the localization length fixed, an explicit integral representation for the resulting probability density is found. It is also exhibited that the latter satisfies a "diffusion'' equation on the group manifold.

Notes: Abstract The time delays involved under different circumstances in nuclear reactions, e.g., isolated or overlapping resonances, are analysed from the unified point of view of unitarity and of the statistical and analytical properties of theS-matrix. A general theorem is proved which says that the average over then open channels of the time delay of a wave packet covering many resonances (whose average separation isD) is given byħ/(nD). The case of an incoherent superposition of monochromatic beams is also studied and the corresponding time delay is evaluated in the statistical model of Ericson.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the statistical distribution of an ensemble of one-channelS-matrices is uniquely determined by requiring that:1)S has poles only in the lower half of the energy plane and2) the functionS(E) is ergodic in a sense to be defined. A Monte Carlo calculation was performed to illustrate numerically the above statement.

Notes: Abstract In the maximum-entropy approach to statistical nuclear reactions one imposes naturally the constraints of unitarity and symmetry of theS-matrix, and of a fixed expectation value ofS. We show that the analytical structure of theS-matrix and the requirement that the problem be ergodic (so that energy averages can be replaced by ensemble averages) impose certain restrictions on the distribution of statisticalS-matrices. Some of these additional constraints are then imposed numerically in a two-channel calculation, and are shown to improve the results for the fluctuation cross sections, the elastic enhancement factor, etc.
