Notes: The densified α-sialon ceramics with the compositions RE0.333Si10Al2ON15 (RE= Yb,Y, Dy,Sm and Nd) were prepared by a two-step hot-pressing sintering. The ceramics doped with smaller cations(Yb3+, Y3+ and Dy3+) are fully composed of α-sialon, while the larger cation-doped ceramics (Sm3+ andNd3+) exist a few M′ (RE2Si3-xAlxO3+xN4-x) phases. A small amount of β-sialon phases are also found inthe Nd-doped sialon. Microstructure observation indicates that Yb-α-sialon consists of equiaxial grains, but when increasing the radius of the doped cations, the elongated α-sialon grains form and the aspectratio of grain increases slightly. TEM observation indicated that almost no intergranular phases exist inthe α-sialon doped with smaller cations, but a few exist in Sm- and Nd-doped α-sialon. Some elongatedα-sialon grains with grain core were found. EDX results suggest that the compositions of the grain shelland that of the core are different. Surrounding the grain core, some misfit dislocations were seen

Notes: Effects of different sintering methods such as pressureless sintering and hot press sintering onrelative density and microstructure of the Al2O3p/LiTaO3 (ALT) composite ceramics were investigated toobtain a preferable sintering process. Relative densities of all ALT composites are below 90% whensintered with the cold isostatical pressing followed by pressureless sintering at temperatures of 1250 to1350°C. The relative densities and microstructure of ALT composite ceramics with the hot press sinteringprocess in a N2 atmosphere at 1150 and 1300°C were investigated. The relative density of ALT compositehot pressed at 1150°C is only 77%, and almost theoretical density at 1300°C. This indicates that sinteringpressure plays an important role in the densification of ALT composite ceramics in temperature range of1150 to 1350°C. Investigation on morphologies of the composites shows that the Al2O3 particlesdistributed along grain boundaries of LiTaO3, which leads to a fine-grained microstructure in the ALTcomposite ceramics

Notes: The in situ TiB whisker reinforced titanium matrix composites were prepared by mechanicalalloying followed by spark plasma sintering. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy andtransmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the microstructure of the TiB whiskers. Theeffect of sintering temperature on morphologies of in situ TiB whiskers was evaluated. With the increaseof spark plasma sintering temperature, the average diameter of in situ TiB whiskers increased. The in situTiB whiskers exhibited a hexagonal shape with (100), (101) and (10 1 ) planes at the transverse sectionand a growth orientation of [010]TiB direction

Notes: Amorphous nano-sized silicoboron carbonitride (Si-B-C-N) powders with average grain size〈50 nm were fabricated by high energy shaker mill using hexagonal boron nitride, graphite and amorphoussilicon powders as starting materials. The powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering at1900° and 1950°C. Amorphous phase were partially retained in ceramic sintered at 1900°C. For ceramicsintered at 1950°C, amorphous Si-B-C-N ceramic transferred to hexagonal BN and cubic SiC

Notes: In situ TiB whiskers reinforced Ti metal matrix composites have been fabricated by sparkplasma sintering (SPS). Microstructure and stacking faults of in situ TiB whiskers in the compositeswere investigated in detailed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmissionelectron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The TiB whiskersexhibit a hexagonal shape at the transverse section and grow along the [010]TiB direction. Thecrystallographic planes of the TiB whiskers at transverse section are always of the (100), (101) and(10 1 ) planes. The interfaces between the in situ TiB and Ti matrix are clean and faceted along(100)TiB side. However, small lateral growth steps are observed along (101) and (10 1 ) planes ofTiB. The stacking faults in TiB whiskers are typically with a stacking fault plane of (100)TiB anddisplacement vectors of 0.5a±0.254c. The formation mechanism of stacking faults has beenproposed and verified by HREM observations

Notes: The microstructure after different ageing treatments and its relation to the mechanicalproperties and corrosion behavior of 7150 alloy have been investigated. The microstructures werestudied by optical microscopy (OM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was shown thatsuitable heat treatments led to a combination of high strength and corrosion resistance of the alloy. The yield strength of the alloy is 580MPa in peak aged state, which can be achieved by one step (120℃/28h) or two step ageing (120℃/6h + 155℃/12h) tempers. The dominant matrix precipitates of thealloy for one step ageing temper are GP zones and η' phase. The alloy after ageing at 120℃ for 28h isnot susceptible to exfoliation corrosion. On the contrary, the alloy after two step ageing (120℃/6h +155℃/12h) showed worse exfoliation corrosion resistance. The alloy exhibits high strength and goodresistance to the exfoliation corrosion after the ageing treatment of 120℃/6h + 165℃/12h. Thedominant precipitates within the grains are η' phase and η phase. The η phase at the grain boundariesplays an important role on the corrosion behaviors. The susceptibility of corrosion is associated withthe potential difference between grain and grain boundary, and the characterization of grain boundaryprecipitates

Notes: The side surfaces of a commercial β-SiC whisker were analyzed by calculating the surface energy and observing the microstructure of the whiskers. The results indicated that the side surfaces displayed a type of zigzag structure and were composed of {111}, {110}, and {100} crystal planes.

Notes: In this paper, pure aluminum and Al-Cu (1%, 3% and 5% mass.) alloy matrix composites reinforced with 40Vol% Al2O3-SiO2 sort fiber were fabricated by Squeeze-casting technique. Microstructure and tensile properties of the composites were investigated by means of SEM, EPMA, TEM and tensile tests. It was found from the experimental results that when pure aluminum, which was added into Cu elements, is used as matrix, chemical reaction occurred at the interface betweenamorphous SiO2 and matrix due to the Cu element diffusion and enrichment towards the sort fiber surface. Results indicated that with the increasing of Cu content the ultimate tensile strength decreased firstly then increased continuously

Notes: The investigation aimed at the invalidation mechanism analysis and reliability evaluation of aluminum alloy welded joint under space environment will provide spaceflight designing epartments and manufactures with important technology gist and data so as to greatly reduce paceflights manufactured cost and improve spaceflight working reliability. In this paper, the tensile properties and microstructures of LF6 aluminum alloy welded joint under vacuum thermal cyclinghave been studied by means of vacuum thermal cycling system. The influence of vacuum thermal cycling on the tensile properties of the welded joint has investigated. Results show that the strength and the enlongation reach their maximum values at about 75 times cycling. The changes of the tensile properties are regarded as resulted from the changes of grain and the motion of dislocation

Notes: The TiB/Ti metal matrix composites (MMCs) with different volume fractions of in situTiB reinforcements were spark plasma sintered at 1000 °C with a pressure of 20 MPa for 5 minutesin vacuum. The in situ synthesized TiB is whisker shape with a hexagonal transverse section anddistributes uniformly and randomly in the Ti matrix. The Young’s modulus of TiB wasback-calculated from the elastic properties of the composites using the Halpin-Tsai model. TheYoung’s moduli of all the composites were found to increase with the increase of TiB volumefraction. The calculated value of TiB Young’s modulus is about 489±83GPa. Values of Young’smoduli of TiB whisker obtained according to different methods were compared and discussed
