Notes: Summary The gamma-induced decarboxylation ofβ-phenylalanine in the solid state is a chain reaction. Both enantiomers and the racemate ofβ-phenylalanine-1-14C show different exponential dose-effect curves for the radiation-induced cleavage of14CO2.

Notes: Summary In continuation to our previous studies (Merwitz, 1971) specifying the dose effect curves for the radiation-induced tritium cleavage from specifically labeled thymines, tritium cleavage from adenine-2-T and adenine-8-T has been investigated. The graphically determined threshold doses for the cleavage of tritium are in the range of 3·105 rad for adenine-8-T and in the range of 2·107 rad for adenine-2-T. Comparison of the dose-effect curves proves that, in contrast to the thymines, tritium cleavage from specifically labeled adenines requires high doses. The divergent radioresistances of thymine and adenine are being discussed.

Notes: Summary The dose-effect curve for the cleavage of tritium fromγ-irradiated cytosine-5-T has been measured and compared with dose-effect curves for other specifically labeled nucleic acid bases. The graphically determined threshold dose for the cleavage of tritium from cytosine-5-T is of the order of 2 ⋅ 104 rad. The radiation-induced radicals in cytosine are discussed.

Notes: Summary The example of thymine-(methyl-T) demonstrates that in the case of radiation damage to one type of molecule different dose-effect curves will occur depending on the state of the molecule. Radiation-induced tritium cleavage from an aerated aqueous solution of thymine-(methyl-T) shows a linear dose dependence without threshold, tritium cleavage from solid thymine-(methyl-T) follows a sigmoid dose-effect curve with threshold. TheG-values for the tritium cleavage from dissolved thymine-(methyl-T) depend on the concentration of the solution, while theG-values for the tritium cleavage from solid thymine-(methyl-T) depend on the dose. The extent of radiation damage in the solid state and in solution is subject to comparative analysis, and the difference in dose-effect relations is discussed.

The comparison of dose-effect curves shows that the radioresistance is increased in the order thymine, uracil, and adenine, respectively. The graphically determined threshold doses for the cleavage of tritium are in the range of 104 rad for uracil-5-T and of 2·104 rad for uracil-6-T. The correlation between cleavage of hydrogen and formation of hydrogen-addition radicals have been discussed.

Notes: Summary The effect of gamma irradiation on tritium release into water (HTO) from phage T2-DNA-(methyl-3H) was studied in diluted aqueous solution. The influence of O2 and of citrate and phosphate buffer was investigated. In oxygenated solutions an enhancement ratio of 3 was found. From the linear dose yield relationsG values were calculated. In the presence of N2O tritium release was doubled, whereas tritium release decreased with increasing citrate concentration. It has been concluded that the major precursor of this tritium release is the OH radical. This was substantiated by experiments using thymine-(methyl-3H) and dimethylsulfoxide.
