Some measurements of the metabolic activity of microorganisms in a standard activated sludge system have been made. The investigations have shown that the measurements of the respiratory activity of microorganisms are a convenient and reliable method for determining the metabolic activity of microorganisms. The values of respiratory activity have shown a high correlation with the rate of substrate removal in a continuous activated sludge process. Hydrogenase activity has shown moderate correlation with the rate of substrate removal.The ATP values did not correlate with any of the methods of measuring the metabolic activity of microorganisms and the quantity of the dry organic mass of activated sludge. Howeever, the highest correlation between the particular parameters of the activated sludge process was obtained after assuming that the ATP total corresponds to the quantity of the active biomass which fact points at the correctness of such an assumption.
