    Notes: Serum diamine oxidase was measured throughout pregnancy in 33 normal pregnancies and 133 women whose pregnancies were complicated. A specific and sensitive method was used. In normal pregnancy, the mean level rises sharply until 18 to 21 weeks, thereafter varying little. Because there is a wide scatter of normal values later in pregnancy, serial diamine oxidase has a restricted place as a placental function test. However, in abortion low or falling levels found. There is an appreciably higher level in twin pregnancy than in normal singleton pregnancies, whilst in the twin pregnancies with complications, the levels tended to fall within the range for normal singleton pregnancies.

    Notes: Abstract Leukotrienes (C4, D4) have been shown to enhance mucus seeretion in both isolated human airway tissue and intact canine tracheain vivo. They also have been implicated as putative mediators in several airways diseases. In previous canine studies the mucus enhancing effect of leukotriene-C4 was blocked by atropine, FLP 55,712, and hexamethonium but not by cutting the superior laryngeal and vagus nerves. We anesthetized mongrel dogs with chloralose (100 mg/kg) and urethane (500 mg/kg) and ventilated them on a pump. To visualize the secretions from submucosal glands, we exposed the mucosa of the upper trachea and coated its surface with powdered tantalum. Seeretions from the glands formed elevation in the tantalum layer (hillocks) with time: the number of tracheal hillocks (an index of mucus secretion) was measured at one or more of the four time points on six dogs after each treatment of the treatment sequence: no LTC4, LTC4, no LTC4+ blocker, and LTC4+ blocker. The potential blocker was diphenhydramine, an H1 antagonist for histamine. LTC4 was injected into the cranial thyroid artery which directly feeds the tracheal segment. We observed hillocks through a dissecting microscope, and the number of hillocks per 1.2 cm2 were counted for a 1–4 min interval. In 6 dogs with 12 responses, LTC4 (10 μg) gave a positive response that was significantly different from control (p〈0.01–0.05) at 2–4 min. Diphenhydramine (n=6), 0.5 mg/kg, a dose which blocked a histamine challenge without blocking an acetylcholine challenge of secretion, gave a statistically significant (p〈0.01–0.05) reduction in mucus secretion at 1–4 min. These results support the conclusion that leukotriene C4 induces mucus secretion in dogs that is blocked by prior diphenhydramine administration. This would indicate histamine has a role, but as yet an unknown mechanism in the action of leukotriene-C4 in enhancing mucus.

    Notes: Abstract The velocities of third sound in superfluid4He films containing submonolayer densities of3He are calculated from the variation of film height with the concentration of3He. The present model assumes that the population of the first-excited, transverse, surface state of the3He impurities directly increases the height of the film because these atoms are preferentially found within the film rather than on the surface. The relative populations of the ground-state and the first excited-state are calculated from a many-body, mean-field theory which takes account of the first two transverse branches of the spectra of the states. Intermolecular and one-ripplon exchange interactions are included. Graphs of the variation of third-sound velocity with3He density are given.

    Notes: Abstract The discovery that 3 He was occupying transverse excited states at submonolayer coverages in 3 He-4 He mixture films on a Nuclepore substrate, was a surprise. In this note we discuss the relationship between theory and experiment in attempting to understand the physics of this behavior. We first discuss various single-atom-limit calculations of the level spacing between the ground-state and first excited state. We then introduce a free, quasi-particle picture for analyzing experimental magnetization step data and compare those results with the single-atom-limit calculations. The experiments clearly show excited state occupation at submonolayer coverages in contradistinction with the calculations. We then briefly discuss a microscopic, semi-phenomenological theory which, in agreement with experiment, yields 3 He occupation of the first excited state at submonolayer coverages. The mechanism is a model 3 He-3 He effective interaction due to one ripplon exchange. This effective interaction is density dependent and very long ranged. It strongly modifies the small-k properties of the 3 He self-energy and, in particular, causes the ground-state to first excited state level spacing to decrease with increasing 3 He areal density.

    Notes: Abstract Third sound speeds in 3 He- 4 He thin films are sensitive to the transverse single-particle state occupied by the 3 He. The third sound speed in the low coverage region with the 3 He occupying the transverse ground-state can be understood quantitatively. The onset of occupation of the first excited transverse state is signaled by a high coverage feature in the third sound speed. Three third sound models for the high coverage region, differing in their assumptions about the spatial distribution of the excited states, are introduced. Using the experimental third sound data, these models can also be used to infer the fractional population of the 3 He in the first excited state as a function of coverage. It is found that the third sound analyses each predict a larger fractional population in the first excited state at monolayer completion than a recent analysis of magnetization step data taken on the same system.

    Notes: Two-dimensional systems of bosons and fermions are studied at zero temperature by means of variational calculations. When viewed as a function of the quantum parameterη = ℏ2/mɛΣ in the variational context, bosons are found to undergo a second-order liquid-to-gas transition, whereas, contrary to expectations, fermions are found to undergo a first-order transition with a region in which liquid and gaseous phases can coexist. Although these results are qualitatively the same as those in three dimensions, it is emphasized that, for two-dimensional fermions, the underlying physics is quite different. These results are examined critically in view of the special properties of two-dimensional systems. It is found that critical values of η are rigorously lower bounds, and it is further argued that the essential features of these results remain valid. Finally, the implications of these results for experiments on submonolayer physisorbed helium and spin-aligned hydrogen systems are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A new approach to the calculation of correlation energies in the random phase approximation (RPA) is introduced. The method is applied to the system of adsorbed 3 He in thin 4 He superfluid films. The 3 He component interacts by means of the exchange of virtual surface interactions (ripplons) in addition to the usual atom-atom interaction. We report on a calculation of the RPA contribution to the 3 He ground-state energy of a previously introduced model for this effective interaction called the one-ripplon-exchange potential (OREP). VOREP is manifestly frequency dependent and complex. In this paper we study the differences in the RPA contribution to the ground-state energy between the fully complex and frequency dependent VOREP and VOREP in the real, static limit.
