Notizen: Summary Ten cases of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma (DCS) were immunohistochemically and histochemically compared with 12 de novo malignant fibrous histiocytomas, 10 osteoblastic osteosarcomas, 9 conventional chondrosarcomas, and 4 fibrosarcomas (all of bone or soft tissues), in order to discern similarities and differences in the immunophenotypes of these neoplasms. All cases of DCS and malignant fibrous histiocytoma were reactive for alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, and several examples of both tumor types bound peanut agglutinin, and expressed positivity for alpha-1-antitrypsin and lysozyme. None of these four cellular markers was observed in de novo osteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma; in addition, conventional chondrosarcoma lacked all of them except for peanut agglutinin receptors. S100 protein reactivity and binding of wheat germ agglutinin were detectable in conventional chondrosarcomas and in rare cells of the anaplastic components of primary DCS, but not in malignant fibrous histiocytoma arising ab initio and the other sarcomas. These results suggest the evolution of a second neoplastic cellular clone in DCS, with primitive morphological and phenotypic characteristics.

Notizen: Abstract Retroperitoneal cystic hamartoma is a rare tumor believed to originate from small portions of the embryonic tailgut that normally disappear in early fetal development. Depending on the location and size of the mass, a wide range of clinical presentations is associated with the lesion. Most lesions are found in the presacrococcygealretrorectal space, but they may also occur in other retroperitoneal locations. Computed tomography (CT) is the most sensitive radiologic study for detecting these tumors, which usually are small, round, sharply marginated, and of homogeneous soft tissue density. We describe the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features in four patients. In three cases, the lesions occurred in the perirectal space, and in one it was found in the iliac fossa. In this last case, there was an additional lesion in the perinephric region.

Notizen: A 10,000-dalton calcium-binding protein (10-kd CaBP) has been described in the placentae and yolk sacs of rats and mice. This protein is similar or identical to vitamin D-dependent intestinal CaBP and these proteins have been implicated in the molecular mechanisms of intestinal calcium absorption and transplacental calcium transport. Using an antiserum to the purified 10-kd rat intestinal CaBP, the localization of CaBP in the 16-17-day mouse yolk sac and placenta was studied immunocytochemically with peroxidase-antiperoxidase labelling and quantified by radial immunodifussion. A high concentration of immunolabelling was observed in the endodermal cells of the intraplacental yolk sac lining the sinuses of Duval. The columnar endodermal cells lining one side of the endodermal sinuses adjacent to fetal vessels contained most of the immunoreactive label. Quantitation by radial immunodiffusion demonstrated a 5.5-fold higher concentration of CaBP in the portion of the placenta containing most of the intraplacental yolk sac than in the maternal half of the placenta. This demonstration of a 10-kd CaBP within the intraplacental yolk sac suggests this protein functions to facilitate placental calcium transport and is the first study which directly supports the hypothesis of a functional role for the sinuses of Duval in calcium transport.
