Notes: Abstract The application of the resonant light pressure created by an axially symmetrical light field for collimating atomic beams has been considered. As an example, consideration is given to the possibility of collimating an atomic beam by the light field produced by the reflection of a plane wave from the internal surface of a metal cone. It has been shown that the radiation pressure can reduce the atomic-beam transverse velocities to the value of the order of 100 cm/s which corresponds to effective temperature of about 10−3 K. A method for producing collimated beams of cold atoms based on simultaneous deceleration and collimation of atomic beams by resonant laser radiation pressure is proposed.

Notes: Abstract We study the dynamics of atoms confined to a quadrupole magnetic trap with an orbiting potential. For typical values of the experimental parameters of the trap, the rotating magnetic field is shown to produce high-frequency modulation of atomic momenta with an amplitude comparable to the widths of the momentum distributions for the lowest oscillation states of atoms in the time-averaged potential. We find the quantum-statistical momentum and position distributions of atoms and show that at temperatures much higher than the effective vibrational temperature of the atoms in the trap the quantum-statistical momentum and position distributions are Gaussian. We also establish that at temperatures comparable to the effective vibrational temperature of the atoms the quantum-statistical momentum distribution has an annular structure in the trap’s symmetry plane, which is due to the deep modulation of the atomic momenta caused by the rotating magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract An analytical theory of optical pumping of velocity-selective coherent population trapping states in three-level Λ-atoms is presented. The theory is based on an atomic density matrix in the superpositional state representation. The representation introduced for the atomic density matrix directly describes coherent population trapping (CPT) states in a three-level Λ-atom and yields an approximate analytical description for the shape of the two-peak momentum (velocity) distribution of atoms. Optical pumping of velocity-selective CPT states is described in the superpositional state representation as a process of redistribution of atoms in the region of small velocities due to the photon recoil. Typical times of formation of velocity-selective CPT states are found to be inversely proportional to the square of the recoil energy.

Notes: Abstract The paper is devoted to a consideration of the motion of a three-level atom in two resonant light waves. A kinetic equation of the Fokker-Planck type for the atomic distribution function is derived, which is valid when the recoil energy is small compared to the linewidths of the resonant transitions. The detailed behaviour of the radiation force and the diffusion tensor are studied numerically. The case of exact resonance and the nonresonant case are both considered. It is shown that a detuning from exact resonance results in a drastic decrease of the resonant light pressure force. For the detuning we determine the condition, under which an efficient action of the light pressure on a three-level atom takes place.

Notes: Abstract Analysis of the possibility of spatial trapping of cold atoms in a standing-wave laser field is presented. It is shown that cold atoms can be trapped for a long time in region ≈ λ in a nonresonant standing-wave field. In a resonant standing-wave field cold atoms can be stored for a long time in the region determined by the cross-section of the laser beam. Trapping and storage together with cooling of atoms that has been suggested earlier allow us in specific cases to increase the sensitivity and the resolution of spectroscopic studies.

Notes: Abstract The application of laser deceleration and monochromatization of atoms in the schemes of single atom fluorescent detection is examined. The analysis performed shows that the use of resonant-light pressure in experiments with atomic beams enables one to obtain an ultimate value of detection selectivity that ranges from 1013 to 1016.
