    Effect of clonidine on sleep patterns in man (1977)

    Notes: Summary Clonidine (300 µg orally) increased in man the total duration of sleep and strikingly reduced the duration of REM sleep. Yohimbine (10 mg per os) did not alter the sleep patterns in man but antagonized the effects of clonidine. These results provide evidence that an α sympathomimetic mechanism could suppress REM sleep and increased the total duration of sleep.

    CT demonstration of intracranial haemorrhage in term newborn following vacuum extractor delivery (1993)

    Notes: Summary Ten term newborns underwent CT of the brain 12–24 h following vacuum extractor delivery. Haemorrhage in the area of the tentorium was demonstrated in all of them, with similar findings in all cases. CT 1 week later demonstrated reabsorption of the blood without demonstrating any other brain pathology. Clinical and CT examination a year after delivery did not reveal any abnormality. The haemorrhage appears to be a benign condition.

    Brain abscess due to Nocardia (1989)

    Notes: Abstract Cerebral Nocardiosis is a rare disease, usually occurring in immunocompromised hosts. We report here two cases of brain abscess due to Nocardia species-one due to usual N. asteroides and other by uncommon N. caviae. N. asteroides affected the brain in a post renal transplant patient, whereas N. caviae caused infection of brain in an apparently healthy individual. To the best of our knowledge, all the previous cases of brain abscess due to Nocardia caviae have been reported in compromised hosts. Agar dilution antimicrobial testing showed relatively higher resistant pattern in N. asteroides. In spite of antimicrobial therapy, both the patients succumbed, one within 4 days and other after an initial improvement for four weeks due to drainage of abscess.
