Notes: Summary Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) were exposed to high-LET krypton (84Kr) ions at low (4.2 rad) and high (1,584 rad) doses and killed to assess acute (36 h post-exposure) and late (35 days post-exposure) effects in the brain by means of electron microscopy. The main findings were: (a) glycogen granules appeared in the neuroglial compartment 36 h after exposure to either dose and were no longer present in flies killed 35 days later, (b) neuronal alterations (swelling and membrane disruption) were observed 35 days after exposure to both doses, (c) changes in the neuroglia (electron-dense masses of concentrically arranged membranous structures) were seen 35 days after exposure. The data are discussed in relation to previous research in the fruit fly using argon (40Ar) charged particles and to other radiation studies performed in the mammalian brain with the view of using the insect brain as a model for detailed study of radiation effects on neurons, neuroglia, and the neuron-neuroglia unit.

Notes: Summary X-irradiation of the head of rats resulted in the accumulation of histochemically demonstrable PAS-positive granules in the brain, which were identified as glucogen. The glycogen granules were confined predominantly to the neuroglial cells; they did not appear in neurons. The amount of glycogen granules was approximately proportional to the dose administered. Although such changes are known to occur under conditions of ionizing particle radiation, this is the first demonstration that they appear following X-irradiation. Quantitative chemical analysis of the brains by the glucose oxydase method demonstrated an increase of glycogen of approximately 40%, 24 hours after exposure to 3.000 r. The biochemical change responsible for the glycogen accumulation may consist in an impairment of the enzymes mediating the incorporation and release of glucose from glycogen.

Notes: Summary Respiratory measurements in young and oldDrosophila melanogaster reveals significant differences between these two groups in response to temperature. The data suggest that there is some degree of temperature compensation of respiration in young insects but that this capacity is lost with age.

Notes: Abstract The composition of a population of Lithodes murrayi Henderson, 1888, and its estival movements in the Crozet Archipelago have been studied from catches made on three summer cruises (1974, 1976, 1982). The vertical distribution of the species in relation to sex and size-classes has been analyzed and the evolution of these parameters during the late austral summer and early autumn followed. Size at first maturity has been estimated. A pattern of the migration of the species is deduced, whereby males precede females and juveniles in the summer displacement to shallower bottoms. Fishing results using traps and beam trawl are compared, and the limitation of the former gear for studying population dynamics is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The naturally occurring radionuclide 210Po is useful as a tracer of diets of marine organisms. Data for 210Pb, the grandparent of 210Po, are less abundant: we therefore report here 210Pb concentrations in a substantial collection of marine biota obtained from the Antarctic Ocean during the SIBEX II cruise in 1985. The general levels of 210Pb are within the range of previously published data but, as in the case of 210Po, there are differences which can be associated with variations in the diet of the organism. The levels of 210Pb in the krill Euphausia superba show seasonal changes which can be interpreted in terms of changing diet. In a simple classification of the pelagic food chain, the levels of 210Pb tend to increase from omnivores to filter-feeders to predators.

Notes: Abstract Objective Analysis of epidemiologic aspects in a trauma intensive care unit (TICU) and assessment of predicted outcomes. Design Prospective study. Samples collected over a 2-year period. Setting A Spanish TICU at a tertiary care centre. Patients A group of 404 trauma patients. Interventions TRISS methodology was applied. Main results Mean age was 35.8±17 years. Mortality was 19.6% over a median ISS=17. Blunt trauma was more frequent than penetrating trauma (90.1% versus 9.9%). Car accident was the major aetiological factor (32.4%) and the highest mortality was among struck pedestrians (26.4%). The cranial region showed the highest incidence of lesion (57.9%) and the neurological complications on stage were the commonest reported on the discharge forms (49.7%). Mechanical ventilatory support (MVS) was applied in 53.2% of patients, with a relative mortality of 35.8%. Survivors differed significantly from nonsurvivors in terms of age, Glasgow Coma Scale rating, RTS, ISS, TRISS, stage and number of complications reported. The risk factors found to be associated with mortality were injury to cranial and abdominal/pelvic regions and age over 65. The TRISS total accuracy was 0.88 (sensitivity=0.67; specificity=0.93; area under the ROC curve=0.85±0.03). Forward stepwise logistic regression analysis selected age, ISS and RTS as the best predictors of survival. When our TRISS results were compared with those anticipated on the basis the MTOS, an injury severity mismatch appeared (z=0.02; M=0.78). Conclusions We found a 19.6% mortality in the TICU. Cranial and abdominal/pelvic injury and age over 65 were the main risk factors on admittance. Clinically, we finally agreed with the majority of TRISS outcome predictions. However, we could not statistically validate the apparent clinical goodness of the TRISS methodology.

Notes: Improvement in laser-plasma analysis makes it necessary to perform accurate calibration in the soft x-ray range. For this purpose we have modified a plasma focus device (27 kJ, 40 kV, and 400 kA) in order to enhance its soft x-ray emission: A hollow anode is used to prevent hard x-ray bremsstrahlung emission, and a lot of filling gases are chosen for their characteristic lines in the keV and sub-keV range (Ne, Ar, O, N, and CH4). These emissions have been absolutely measured with an x-ray bolometer and can be used directly or indirectly (in the fluorescent mode: Mg Kα at 1.254 keV) for x-ray calibration of various diagnostics. Some detector calibrations in pulsed regime (10 ns) are presented [films, solid state Si doped p-intrinsic-n (PIN) diodes, and charge-coupled devices (CCD) arrays.]
