Summary The appearance of vacuoles within muscle fibers, — a finding mostly described as vacuolar degeneration, — occurs in different muscular affections, i. e. progressive muscular dystrophy, dystrophic myotonia, myotonia congenita, paroxysmal paralysis, poliomyelitis and in preference in myositis. In a series of cases of inflammatory muscular affection several peculiar types of vacuolar degeneration were observed, either characterized by the presence of erythrocytes within the vacuoles, or consisting of a cystical structure containing nuclei, a finding suspected as a parasitosis. Up to date, there are several controversal hypotheses on the pathogenesis of these alterations. Probably the main factors are to be found in hypertrophy of the muscle fibre and in local circulatory and metabolic disturbances.

Zusammenfassung Das Auftreten von Vacuolen innerhalb der Muskelfasern, meist als vacuoläre Degeneration bezeichnet, ist ein Befund, der bei den verschiedensten Muskelaffektionen wie progressive Muskeldystrophie, dystrophische Myotonie, Myotonia congenita, paroxysmaler Lähmung, Poliomyelitis und vor allem bei den Myositiden vorkommt. Wir konnten bei einer Reihe von Fällen mit entzündlicher Muskelaffektion einige besondere Formen der vacuolären Degeneration beobachten, die sich einmal im Auftreten von Erythrocyten der Vacuolen äußerte, zum anderen den Aspekt eines cystenartigen Gebildes hat, das Kerne enthielt, und so den Verdacht einer Parasitose erweckte. Die Vorstellungen der Pathogenese dieser Veränderungen sind noch sehr vielgestaltig und umstritten; wahrscheinlich ist in der Hypertrophie der Faser und in Faktoren, wie lokale Zirkulations- und Stoffwechselstörungen, die Hauptursache zu suchen.
