Notes: Abstract The degradation of veratraldehyde by Alcaligenes paradoxus was studied. Three products, veratric acid, vanillic acid and a minor amount of veratryl alcohol, were identified. The effect of various metabolic inhibitors on the uptake of veratraldehyde, veratric and vanillic acid showed the uptake process to be energy-dependent. The NAD+-dependent enzyme responsible for the conversion of veratraldehyde to veratric acid has been separated from veratryl alcohol-oxidizing enzyme.

Notes: Abstract  The main aim of the present investigation is to experimentally study the flow parameters inside a spherical combustion chamber of an indirect injection diesel engine. For this a spherical chamber has been fitted in the cylinder head. Using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometer, measurements have been made under non-firing condition at 400 and 500 rpm during compression stroke. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity values are evaluated from the hot-wire signal. Measurements are made at three axial planes, six angular locations and four radial positions. Large variations of mean velocity and turbulence intensity have been observed within the chamber. From the measurements, the mean velocity and turbulence intensity are found to be maximum at 30° before compression TDC and these values are found to decrease towards the centre of the pre-chamber. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity distribution with respect to various locations and crank angles are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract Two isolates of methanethiol producing coryneform bacteria sharing morphological and physiological similarities with Brevibacterium are described. They were isolated from bumble-foot-like manifestations of poultry but proved to be non-pathogenic for experimental animals.

Notes: The objective of this study is to obtain a fundamental understanding of the behavior of reactors with a permselective wall (membrane reactors) in terms of: design parameters (reactor length, membrane thickness); operating variables (pressure ratio, feed flow rate); physical properties (rate constant, permeability of fast gas, permselectivity, equilibrium constant); and flow patterns (recycle, cocurrent, countercurrent). Pure feed reacts on the high-pressure side of the membrane, and the product(s) formed are continuously removed to the low-pressure side so that thermodynamic equilibrium is never reached. It is shown by simulation that equilibrium shift can be enhanced by: recycling unconverted reactant; shifting feed location to separate products; and maintaining high permeation rates to reduce backreaction. It is also shown that the choice between cocurrent flow and countercurrent flow depends on the system parameters.
