    Notes: We present Dirac–Hartree–Fock (DHF) atomic structure results for many-electron atoms (Z=2–86) using kinetically balanced geometric basis sets of Gaussian functions. There is no "variational collapse'' or bound failure if we impose the condition of kinetic balance between the large and the small component spinors along with proper boundary conditions for bound state orbitals. Furthermore, with a finite-size nucleus model, the DHF total energy for atoms converges more rapidly to the numerical Dirac–Fock (DF) limit with a smaller number of basis functions than those calculations where a point nucleus is assumed. By systematically extending the geometric basis sets, we have obtained the DHF total energies for all atoms(up to Z=86) within a few millihartrees of the numerical (DF) limit, with smooth convergence from above.

    Notes: The bio-geochemical cycle of phosphorus is significantly influenced by microbes in the aquatic environment. Organic phosphorus compounds are decomposed and mineralized by enzymatic complexes such as phosphatases produced by microbes. Enzymatic catalysis results in the production of orthophosphate, which can be used readily by primary producers. Even the smallest concentration of phosphate in water has an influence over the production process in aquaculture systems. Extracellular alkaline phosphatase activity was observed in water and sediment media of aquaculture ponds with different management practices. Heterotrophic bacterial populations as well as phosphatase-producing bacterial populations were higher in sediments compared with water. In the freshwater fish ponds, Bacillus spp. were the dominant forms of bacteria producing phosphatase. The alkaline phosphatase activity of sediment was always higher than that of water. The partitioning of extracellular alkaline phosphatase in pond water by a 0.22-µm membrane filter revealed that a proportion was often free rather than cell associated and might have originated as free enzymes released by enriched sediments or by fish or microbes. In the case of water, although the dissolved alkaline phosphatase activity was lower than the total alkaline phosphatase activity, the former was nevertheless unimportant, as it constituted about 20% of the ‘total’ activity. Free alkaline phosphatase activity shared a negative correlation with the orthophosphate concentration of water, whereas gross alkaline phosphatase activity was positively correlated with the total phosphorus and bacterial population of water.

    Notes: Chloroplast DNA variation in 96 Prunus avium L. cultivars was assessed and compared with the results of a previous study of cpDNA diversity in 23 wild populations of the species. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used in these studies. Approximately 9% of the chloroplast genome was analyzed, using five universal primer pairs and three restriction enzymes. Ten polymorphic fragments were common to both the wild and sweet cherry; eight polymorphic fragments were found only in the wild cherry. In the cultivars, all mutations were small (5-30 bp) indels. In the wild populations, a point mutation was also detected in addition to indels. The mutational combinations revealed three haplotypes in the cultivars, which are the main haplotypes in the wild cherry populations. Chloroplast DNA diversity in wild cherry is higher (16 haplotypes) than in sweet cherry cultivars (three haplotypes). The probable wild origin of the sweet cherry cultivars in the maternal line, on the basis of haplotypic similarity, was discussed.

    Notes: A new algorithm, called the term-selection algorithm (TSA), is derived to treat small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data by fitting models to the scattering intensity using weighted Hermite polynomials. This algorithm exploits the orthogonal property of the Hermite polynomials and introduces an error-reduction ratio test to select the correct model terms or to determine which polynomials are to be included in the model and to estimate the associated unknown coefficients. With no a priori information about particle sizes, it is possible to evaluate the real-space distribution function as well as three- and one-dimensional correlation functions directly from the models fitted to raw experimental data. The success of this algorithm depends on the choice of a scale factor and the accuracy of orthogonality of the Hermite polynomials over a finite range of SAXS data. An algorithm to select a weighted orthogonal term is therefore derived to overcome the disadvantages of the TSA. This algorithm combines the properties and advantages of both weighted and orthogonal least-squares algorithms and is numerically more robust for the estimation of the parameters of the Hermite polynomial models. The weighting feature of the algorithm provides an additional degree of freedom to control the effects of noise and the orthogonal feature enables the reorthogonalization of the Hermite polynomials with respect to the weighting matrix. This considerably reduces the error in orthogonality of the Hermite polynomials. The performance of the algorithm has been demonstrated considering both simulated data and experimental data from SAXS measurements of dewaxed cotton fibre at different temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract Direct measurements of local heat flux and temperature from rotating cylinders have been carried out using Gardon type foil heat flux sensors and a power supply cum instrumentation slip ring set up. The local and average heat transfer results are presented covering a rotational Reynolds number range of 2 × 104 to 6.2 x 104 corresponding to the speeds varying from 400 to 1,400 rpm. A correlation has been derived for peripherally averaged values of Nusselt numbers: $$\overline {Nu_r } = 0.55Re_r^{0.661} $$ . The values of surface average Nusselt number for the cylinder under the present rotating conditions are found to be higher than for a stationary cylinder in crossflow and for a cylinder rotating about its own axis, in the range of present experiments.

    Notes: Abstract  Seven interspecific hybrids were produced between Brassica maurorum (♀), a wild species resistant to Alternaria blight and white rust, and all the monogenomic (B. campestris, B. nigra and B. oleracea) and digenomic (B. juncea, B. napus and B. oleracea) crop brassicas (♂) through embryo rescue. The hybrids were confirmed by means of morphological and cytological studies. All the hybrids were pollen-sterile. Amphidiploids were induced in three of the hybrids: B. maurorum×B. napus, B. maurorum×B. carinata, B. maurorum×B. nigra. The hybrids were also confirmed through DNA analyses for nuclear and organelle genomes using RAPD and RFLP techniques.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Il est impossible de diagnostiquer une ostéomyélite d'origine coccidioïdienne sur son seul aspect clinique. La plupart des cas évoquent la tuberculose ou, au mieux, un type plus commun d'ostéomyélite fungique, à savoir l'actinomycose. Les 24 cas publiés dans la littérature mondiale n'ont été diagnostiqués que par la culture et l'examen anatomopathologique. Nous avons rencontré les mêmes difficultés de diagnostic clinique dans un cas qui a été confirmé par l'anatomo-pathologie. La lésion a guéri complétement avec un traitemant antifungique spécifique. Nous rapportons ici ce cas, en raison de sa rareté.
    Notes: Summary Coccidioidal osteomyelitis is difficult to diagnose. Confirmation depends on culture and histopathological examination. This rare type of fungal osteomyelitis is to be considered in the differential diagnosis of a chronic infection in some areas of the world. Specific treatment with excision and amphotericin-B can be effective.

    Notes: Abstract  High chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) diversity was found within and among populations of Prunus spinosa sampled from seven European deciduous forests. A study of 12% of the total chloroplast genome detected 44 mutations, which were distributed over 24 haplotypes; four were common to two or more populations and the rest were unique haplotypes. The most-abundant and widely distributed haplotype was H2 (frequency = 41% approximately). Six of the seven populations were polymorphic. All of the six polymorphic populations had ”private” haplotypes (frequency 〈 5%) in addition to common haplotypes. The UPGMA dendrogram demonstrated a correlation between populations and their geographical locations. The total diversity was high (hT = 0.824) and a major portion of it was within populations (hs = 0.663). The level of population subdivision for unordered alleles was low (GST = 19.5%) and for ordered alleles was lower (NST = 13.6%). No phylogeographic structure could be demonstrated in the present geographical scale. High polymorphism in the cpDNA of P. spinosa has to be considered carefully when planning phylogenetic studies involving this species.

    Notes: Abstract  ζ-potential measurements using the streaming potential method were performed on several differently modified jute fibers. The time dependence of the ζ-potential measured in 1 × 10−3 M KCl solution offers the possibility to characterize the water-uptake behavior and the velocity constant of this process for almost all the jute fibers investigated. All the jute fibers contain, as expected, dissociable acidic surface functional groups as could be verified by measuring the pH dependence of the ζ-potential. Remarkably a peak (increase in the negative ζ-potential values) was detected while measuring the ζ–pH dependency. The origin of this peak is still questionable; however, it could be observed that this peak is a function of the degree of surface coverage of additional components, such as fats, waxes or grafted polymers, i.e. the accessibility of ether functions in the jute fiber surface.
