    Notes: : Precipitation, throughfall, and stream pH were measured weekly over a 27-week period in 1982 on the Little Millseat watershed in eastern Kentucky. The average pH values over the study period were 4.3, 4.9, and 6.4, respectively, indicating significant buffering as water moved from the atmosphere, through the deciduous canopy, and through or over the soil to the stream. Regression analysis demonstrated that the timing and amount of precipitation were important factors influencing the pH of the throughfall. Weekly precipitation and the three-week average precipitation were statistically significant variables, explaining 53 percent of the variance in the observed through- fall pH. Precipitation pH was not a statistically significant variable for this watershed and sampling period.

    Notes: With modern machinery and modem techniques of grass production, mechanical-or zero-grazing offers a means of utilizing the crop to perfection. Whether this results in enhanced profits depends largely upon the farm and the specific circumstances. It may, it may not. What is evident is that the health of the cows is not affected by an unnatural manner of summer feeding; the sward, per se, may be improved by the regular and uniform defoliation; and under conditions of intensive production and the vital need to use profitably every blade of grass, as for instance on small, highly-rented farms, the practice of zero-grazing merits the most careful consideration. It cannot lightly be dismissed as merely a new fad.

    Notes: An odontogenic epithelial cell line, ROE-2B, was established by propagating disaggregated immature, unmineralized maxillary third molar tooth germs from 11-day old Sprague-Dawley rats on a feeder layer of Mitomycin-C treated NIH 3T3 embryonic mouse fibroblasts. The cell line has been maintained for more than 6 months and through 7 passages. Light microscopic examination of cells revealed colonies with epithelial morphology. Electron microscopic examination confirmed the epithelial nature by the demonstration of tonofilaments, desmosomes and basal lamina. Cells were also shown to have secretory vacuoles, an abundance of granular endoplasmic reticulum, free ribosomes, Golgi complex and mitochondria. Surface activity in the form of pseudopodia-like projections and micropinocytosis were noted. Epithelial cells forming keratin were demonstrated by a positive histochemical reaction with Rhodanile Blue. Immunohistochemical studies showed a positive reaction for CAM 5.2 indicating that the ROE-2B cells express the cytokeratins of simple or glandular epithelia. The ROE-2B cell line will be useful for studies on in vitro biological behaviour of odontogenic epithelial cells, and may allow the establishment of in vitro models of odontogenic tumours.

    Notes: Abstract A buffer strip can perform a multitude of functions, and these include channel stability, a filter for sediment and nutrients, water purification (e.g., bacteria and pathogens), a nondisturbance area, and the provision of terrestrial and stream habitat. These functions are reviewed with specific application to Australian conditions, and methods for modeling their performance are outlined. The primary focus is on the use of buffer strips to minimize waterway pollution from diffuse sources since their use is often justified on this basis. Particular attention is given to the conditions under which a buffer strip will act as an effective filter and the conditions under which it will fail. Buffer strips are most effective when the flow is shallow (nonsubmerged), slow, and enters the buffer strip uniformly along its length. Their sediment trapping performance decreases as the sediment particle size decreases. Nutrients are often preferentially attached to fine sediment. As a result, buffer strips are better filters of sediment than of nutrients. Buffer strips should only be considered as a secondary conservation practice after controlling the generation of pollutants at their source and, to be effective, buffer strips should always be carefully designed, installed, and maintained.

    Notes: Abstract This paper examines the characteristics of four different methods of estimating the fractal dimension of profiles. The semi-variogram, roughness-length, and two spectral methods are compared using synthetic 1024-point profiles generated by three methods, and using two profiles derived from a gridded DEM and two profiles from a laser-scanned soil surface. The analysis concentrates on the Hurst exponent H,which is linearly related to fractal dimension D,and considers both the accuracy and the variability of the estimates of H.The estimation methods are found to be quite consistent for Hnear 0.5, but the semivariogram method appears to be biased for Happroaching 0 and 1, and the roughness-length method for Happroaching 0. The roughness-length or the maximum entropy spectral methods are recommended as the most suitable methods for estimating the fractal dimension of topographic profiles. The fractal model fitted the soil surface data at fine scales but not at broad scales, and did not appear to fit the DEM profiles well at any scale.

    Notes: Singularities leading to the calculation of spurious velocity fields have been observed in the tangent stiffness equations assembled during the finite-element analysis of square blocks of purely cohesive perfectly plastic material. These occur because of weaknesses in conventional implementations of the plastic flow rule. Both twisting and swaying modes occur which interfere with the calculation of uniform velocity fields for blocks responding to uniform applied stress. Various techniques can be used to eliminate the problem. The phenomenon does not eventuate when non-uniform stress fields are acting, so does not affect the solution of practical plasticity problems.
