    Notes: Abstract Streptavidin and avidin were adsorbed onto graphite surfaces and images of their structures were obtained using a scanning tunnelling microscope. Individual protein molecules and their subunits were observed, and their sizes were found to agree closely with measurements from a subunit model based upon the crystal structure of streptavidin. The process of adsorption of streptavidin-FITC and avidin succinylfluorescein isothiocyanate onto the graphite surface was also investigated using fluorescence microscopy.

    Notes: Abstract We have measured the g-shift in superfluid3He-B as a function of temperature above 0.5 mK at a pressure of 1.03 bar, and a frequency of 3.87 MHz. We compare our results with predictions of the quasi-classical and Ginzburg-Landau theories, and present values of the Fermi-liquid parameter F 2 a and the β-parameter β345.

    Notes: Abstract We examine the theory of collisionless transverse current waves in bulk superfluid3He-B, including the coupling to the order parameter collective modes. At low frequencies, Ω ≪ δ(T), the order parameter modes do not contribute to the restoring force for a transverse current, and the quasiparticle contribution drops rapidly as the gap in the spectrum develops. Thus, low-frequency transverse sound becomes overdamped at temperatures nearT c . However, at low temperatures (T ≲0.3T c ) the off-resonant coupling to the J = 2−,M = +-1 modes stabilizes a propagating transverse current mode, with a large phase velocity and low damping for frequencies above a critical frequency that is approximately that of theJ = 2 − mode. We also discuss the similarities and differences of longitudinal and transverse sound in the superfluid phases. For example, in zero field, right- and left-circularly polarized waves are degenerate. A magnetic field, with $$\overrightarrow \operatorname{H}||\overrightarrow {\text{q}}$$ , lifts this degeneracy, giving rise to the analog of circular dichroism and birefringence of electromagnetic waves. Thus, transverse waves may be more easily detected in the B-phase than in normal3He.

    Notes: The wear rate of restorative dental composite resins is an important parameter in the assessment of their in vivo performance. The two more widely used methods of quantifying wear are measuring the dimensional change and measuring the change in the mass of the specimen. The former method is complicated by uneven wear of specimens and presents difficulties with samples of irregular shape, and the latter method involves measurements of changes in mass as small as tens of micrograms with specimens of sizes similar to those encountered clinically. A 90Sr beta particle transmission gauge has been designed and constructed to enable the wear rate of small specimens of dental composite resins to be measured. The 90Sr beta particle transmission gauge enables indirect measurements of changes in mass to be made and overcomes some of the difficulties inherent in the direct measurement of mass and length. Applications of the 90Sr beta particle transmission gauge to the measurement of wear rates are given for restorative dental resins having a range of inorganic filler contents and types. The results show that the 90Sr beta particle transmission gauge is capable of measuring the rate of wear to a degree of precision similar to that of micrometer-derived measurements.
