    Notes: New closure models for turbulent free shear flows are presented in this paper. They are based on a weakly nonlinear theory with a description of the dominant large-scale structures as instability waves. Two models are presented that describe the evolution of the free shear flows in terms of the time-averaged mean flow and the dominant large-scale turbulent structure. The local characteristics of the large-scale motions are described using linear theory. Their amplitude is determined from an energy integral analysis. The models have been applied to the study of an incompressible mixing layer. For both models, predictions of the mean flow development are made. In the second model, predictions of the time-dependent motion of the large-scale structures in the mixing layer are made. The predictions show good agreement with experimental observations.

    Notes: In this paper numerical calculation of the spatial stability of disturbances in the parallel and nonparallel Blasius boundary layers is considered. Chebyshev polynomials are used for discretization. The problem with the boundary condition at infinity is overcome, and the resulting nonlinear matrix eigenvalue problem is attacked directly. The secondary eigenvalue problem for three-dimensional disturbances is shown to be uniformly stable, and particular solutions of this problem generated by the Orr–Sommerfeld equation are shown. A numerical solution of the nonparallel problem is considered using Chebyshev polynomials. The matrix equations are analyzed directly and the problem of uniqueness of the nonparallel correction is settled by careful application of the Fredholm alternative. Nonparallel corrections to the streamwise eigenfunction are shown.

    Notes: This paper describes the spatial stability characteristics of compressible elliptic jets. Solutions are obtained to the compressible, inviscid, linearized equations of motion; the compressible Rayleigh equation. Separable forms of solution are obtained in the jet potential core and outside the jet in terms of series of Mathieu and modified Mathieu functions. These solutions are matched using a shooting method that integrates the Rayleigh equation through the region of nonuniform velocity and density. Four classes of instability modes are studied; modes that are odd or even about the jet's major and minor axes. Their stability characteristics are documented for a range of jet aspect ratios, jet Mach numbers and temperatures, and azimuthal distributions of jet shear layer thickness. The growth rates of the modes are found to depend on their class and the jet thickness on the major and minor axes. The mode that "flaps'' about the jet major axis is found to be the most unstable as the jet Mach number or aspect ratio increases. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper describes a calculation technique to determine the linear instability characteristics of jets of arbitrary exit geometry. In particular, elliptic and rectangular jets are considered. The numerical procedure involves both a conformal transformation between the computational domain and the physical plane and a solution of the transformed stability equation in the computational domain. Modern, efficient, conformal mappings are used for both simply and doubly connected domains. The numerical solution is based on a hybrid finite difference/pseudospectral discretization of the stability equation. The technique is validated by comparison with previous stability calculations for circular and elliptic jets. Calculations are performed for the stability characteristics of elliptic and rectangular jets of aspect ratio 2:1. Growth rates, phase velocities, and pressure eigenfunctions are presented.

    Notes: Conformal co-ordinate transformations are used to map rectangular computational domains onto arbitrary simply and doubly connected regions with smooth boundaries. The efficient numerical schemes of Wegmann involving the solution of the inverse boundary correspondence function problems associated with the mapping of the unit disc or circular annulus onto simply or doubly connected domains, respectively, are employed. The numerical implementation of these schemes is emphasized. Examples are generated for regions with elliptic inner and outer boundaries. Additional examples are used to demonstrate the accuracy and convergence of the schemes and their practical limitations. The techniques are found to converge well if holomorphic functions are used to describe the boundaries. The use of preconditioning maps is also discussed.
