Notes:
The polymerization of 3-methylbutene-1 by TiCl3-Al(C2H5)3 catalysts in dilute solution above 80°C. yields a polymer which is contaminated with polyethylene. By using tagged aluminum alkyl, this polyethylene was shown to arise almost wholly by displacement of ethylene from the alkyl by the monomer. This side reaction was shown to be a general one in the polymerization of α-olefins other than propylene at elevated temperatures. Analysis of the gas phase above the reaction showed also that some decomposition of the monomer occurs under these conditions.
