    Notes: Laboratory work to improve the performance of storm-water separators, to meet new Environment Agency and European standards, is described in this paper. Residence-time distribution testing, using particulate and dissolved tracers, was used to study the hydraulics of separation. Oil-separation efficiency and head-loss analysis was used to develop additional final coalescing filters to reduce oil concentrations in the discharge to less than 5 mg/l. Field tests found lower oil, but greater metal, concentrations in runoff compared with those previously reported. It is suggested that improved separators could provide part of a multi-barrier design to improve the sustainability of removal of priority pollutants in highway runoff.

    Notes: Background:  Solitary sclerotic fibroma (SF) presents as a well circumscribed dermal nodule, composed of sparse spindle cells with alternating wavy collagen fibers arranged in a storiform pattern. The histogenesis and nature of this histologically distinct lesion are uncertain. Whether this peculiar tumor represents a true hamartoma or a degenerating end of various fibrous lesions such as pleomorphic fibroma (PF), dermatofibroma, or angiofibroma is still controversial. High proliferating index of spindle cells in SF argues against the possibility of being a degenerating end product of another lesion.Methods:  We studied morphological features and immunoprofile of eight SFs, in comparison with four PFs, one collagenized dermatofibroma, two angiofibromas, and two periungual fibromas. Immunostains for CD34, CD31, O13 (CD99), Factor XIIIa, S-100, CD68 (KP-1), and MIB-1 were carried out using a labeled streptavidin–biotin method with DAKO-automated immunostainer. Paraffin blocks of two SFs were reprocessed for electron microscopic studies. Clinical data of all patients with SF were also reviewed.Results:  Spindle cells and pleomorphic cells in SF and PF showed diffuse immunoreactivity for CD34 and O13 but were negative for CD31, S-100, and CD68. Spindle cells in one dermatofibroma and one angiofibroma were positive for Factor XIIIa. Proliferating index (MIB-1) was very low in all cases of SF, contradicting some previous reports.Conclusions:  SF is a fibrotic lesion with cells positive for CD34 and O13. It shares a common immunoprofile with PF but is distinct from dermatofibroma and other common spindle cell lesions of skin. O13 expression in SF has not been previously described.

    Notes: Abstract Equity in the distribution of irrigation water has long been an operational objective for the management of the large canal systems in the north and west of the Indian subcontinent. How well that operational objective continues to be met is the central concern of the research reported in this paper. Detailed studies of canal operations were conducted on three distributaries in the Lower Chenab Canal system in Punjab Province, Pakistan. Mananwala and Lagar Distributaries off-take in the head reach of the Gugera Branch Canal and Pir Mahal Distributary is at the very tail of this Branch. Flow conditions for these distributaries and of selected outlets served by each were measured daily throughout 1988, and data were converted to discharges. These field observations show that discharge variation at the head of distributaries greatly exceeds the original design criteria. The data also indicate that two design assumptions for outlets are no longer valid: continuous full supply water level in the distributary and outlet modular flow conditions. Field measurements confirm that the distribution of surface water among the outlets of all three distributaries is substantially inequitable. Outlets in the channels' head reaches commonly draw 3 to 6 times greater share of total supplies than do tail outlets. Although all three selected distributaries are perennial canals, some outlets remained dry for up to 90% of the total operational days in a year. Finally, evaluation of field data also shows that better operational procedures at the distributary level can substantially improve water supply conditions in the tail reaches.

    Notes: Abstract In vitro clonal propagation of guava ‘Banaras local’ was achieved by culturing nodal explants of mature trees on Murashige and Skoog (MS) revised medium supplemented with 4.5 μM 6-benzyladanine (BA) alone or in combination with either 0.6 μM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 0.5 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) or 0.3 μM gibberellic acid (GA3). Multiple shoots were induced to form by enhancement of axillary branching and BA (4.5 μM) without any auxin and gibberellin was found to give best shoot multiplication rate. In this medium 3–6 shoots developed on explants collected from field-grown plants and 5–10 shoots developed on explants taken from in vitro proliferated shoots within 12 wk of culture. A prior transfer of shoot clumps to a medium containing a lower concentration of BA (0.5 μM) before harvesting of cuttings for rooting allowed rapid extension growth and increased the number of usable shoots per culture. Adventitious rooting occurred after subculturing excised shoots on a medium containing 1/2 strength MS salts, 1.5% sucrose, 1 μM each of IBA and α-naphtha-leneacetic acid (NAA), and 1 gl-1 activated charcoal. Regenerated plantlets were successfully established on soil.

    Notes: Abstract A two-dimensional finite element model is applied to the San Mateo Basin, California in order to investigate feasible and efficient management alternatives to enhance the basin yield and preserve the basin water quality. The model utilizes lumped approximation methods for the determination of its subsurface boundary conditions, and incorporates a variety of hydrological processes. The model solves uncoupled flow and transport equations using a nodal domain integration technique for the flow model and an integrated finite difference method for the transport model. The model incorporates the basin inputs and outputs as ocean flux, well and phreatophyte extractions, subsurface inflow, precipitation and streambed percolation. Modeling results indicate that the substained yield may be maximized by interception of ocean outflow from the basin. An improvement of about four times of the historical sustained yield was achieved. This strategy required relocation of existing wastewater recharge ponds and increasing basin extractions. In order to intercept most of the ocean outflow by increasing basin extractions, simulated subsurface seawater intrusion was observed. The water quality study indicated that the basin yield could be increased significantly by moderately relaxing the water quality criteria near the ocean.
