Notizen: Abstract: The regional distribution of c-fos mRNA in the mouse brain has been investigated by in situ hybridization autoradiography after seizures induced by an acute electroconvulsive shock (ECS). ECS led to a widespread induction of the proto-oncogene c-fos in the brain, with highest concentrations in discrete areas within the limbic system and also in the hypothalamus and cerebellum. The mild stress of sham treatment in earclipped animals induced a weaker and qualitatively different pattern of c-fos mRNA expression involving the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. These data suggest the usefulness of c-fos in situ hybridization as a marker of neuronal stimulation and in mapping a range of effects from a mild stress to the robust changes of an electroconvulsive seizure.

Notizen: We propose two realistic schemes for producing electron spin-polarized alkaline-earth ions. One of the schemes is based on one-photon resonant two-photon ionization via fine structure manifolds of triplet states, while the other is based on one-photon resonant one-photon ionization. For both schemes we find that the ionization must take place from a triplet state to produce spin-polarized photoions. Photoions produced from a singlet state are always unpolarized regardless of the laser polarization and a magnetic sublevel from which ionization takes place. We carry out specific analysis for both schemes with Sr atoms, and find 85%–90% and 66% polarizations for the former and the latter schemes, respectively, if the wavelengths and polarizations of lasers are judiciously chosen. In particular, if all the produced photoions are in the ground s state, we find an exact one-to-one correspondence between the spin-polarization of photoions and ejected photoelectrons. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have studied laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) spectra of SiO+ produced by laser ablation of a Si wafer in oxygen ambient gas. Emission from neutral and ionic species of Si atoms and SiO molecules is also studied in the laser-induced plasma plume. The optimum oxygen pressure for the formation of molecular ions is found to be ∼120 mTorr. The rotational temperature of SiO+ ions shows rapid thermalization toward room temperature within 20 μs. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract: The release of S-100 protein from epididymal fat pads was enhanced by epinephrine in vitro, and about 50% of S-100 protein in the tissue was released into the medium after 2-h incubation at 37°C with 10 μM epinephrine. Similar results were obtained with the incubation of isolated adipocytes. The S-100 protein release was also enhanced by isoproterenol, norepinephrine, ACTH, and dibutyryl cyclic AMP, which all increase the lipolysis by increasing cyclic AMP levels in the tissue. Propranolol, a β-adrenergic blocker, could block the increase of S-100 protein release by catecholamines, indicating that the release was mediated by the β-adrenergic effect of catecholamines. However propranolol had no suppressive effect on the enhancement of S-100 protein release by ACTH or dibutyryl cyclic AMP. Insulin had an inhibitory effect on the epinephrine-enhanced S-100 protein release. Epinephrine or ACTH could not stimulate the S-100 protein release in the absence of Ca2+, whereas the epinephrine-enhanced glycerol release was not affected under the same conditions. The increase in S-100 protein release was induced by only a pretreatment of the tissue with epinephrine. However, the lipolysis in the tissue was not enhanced by the pretreatment alone. These results indicate that the release of S-100 protein from adipocytes is regulated by the hormones that have been known to control the lipolysis with a manner slightly different from that of lipolysis.

Notizen: Abstract: The effect of catecholamines on the levels of S-100 protein and nervous system-specific enolase (NSE) in epididymal adipose tissue of Wistar rats in vivo was examined by sensitive enzyme immunoassay methods. Soluble S-100 protein levels in the adipose tissue of 9-12-week-old rats (1.46 ± 0.19 μg/mg protein) were decreased to 〈50% of those of controls by serial injection (for 4–7 days) of epinephrine (0.1 mg/day) or norepinephrine (0.15 mg) with, however, little effect on the levels of membrane-bound (pentanol-extractable) S-100 protein. A significant decrease in the soluble S-100 protein levels was observed at 2 h after a single injection of epinephrine (1.04 ± 0.13 μg/mg protein). On the other hand, levels of NSE subunit (γ subunit or 14–3–2 protein) in adipose tissue (0.51 ± 0.03 γγ-equivalent pmol/mg protein) were increased to 170% of control by serial injection (for 7 days) of epinephrine or norepinephrine with little change of the level of enolase a subunit on a mg protein basis. Isoproterenol had no apparent effect on the levels of soluble S-100 protein and NSE subunit. These results suggest that the levels of S-100 protein and NSE in adipose tissue are regulated by catecholamines.

Notizen: Transitional cell papillomas rarely develop in the fossa navicularis of the anterior urethra. We observed such a case of transitional cell papilloma and detected human papillomavirus type 6 (HPV-6) DNA in this papilloma by polymerase chain reaction. To our knowledge this report is the first of HPV-infected transitional papilloma in the anterior urethra.

Notizen: Background: Radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) has resulted in substantial blood loss and the frequent need for homologous blood transfusion. In this study, the efficacy of autologous blood transfusion, from medical and financial perspectives, was evaluated in patients undergoing RRP. Methods: Between 1994 and 2000, 80 patients with localized prostate cancer underwent RRP in our institute. Based on informed consent, preoperative donation of autologous blood (PDA) was performed in 65 out of 80 patienets. Four or six units were donated during the first 3 years; however, donation units were reduced to a maximum of 4 units since 1997 onwards. The discard rate of donated blood and frequency of homologous transfusion were examined. Changes of hematocrit (Ht) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels through donation and surgery and important factors that may affect postoperative levels of Ht and Hb were evaluated in 56 patients receiving 4-unit donations. Results: Overall, 2 or 4 units of donated blood were discarded in four patients and homologous transfusion was required in two patients. In 56 patients receiving 4-unit donation, the mean Ht level at predonation was 43.3%. Following donation, this decreased to 35.7%. The administration of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) relieved declining Ht levels following donation, but changes in Ht levels after surgery were minor. Important factors related to postoperative decline of Ht and Hb levels were operative time and blood loss. Conclusions: The program of 4-unit PDA can be performed safely without rHuEpo injection, and it is useful to reduce the risk of requiring homologous transfusion. However, more efficient programs to relieve patient burden and to reduce medical cost are needed.

Notizen: Abstract An overview of the regional metamorphic belts of Japan is given in the context of the tectonic evolution of the Japanese Islands. The Japanese Islands were situated on an active margin of the Eurasian continent or its constituent landmass before their assembly during the Phanerozoic. The Japanese Islands are composed mainly of metamorphosed and unmetamorphosed accretionary complexes, granitoids and their effusive equivalents that were formed by the Cordilleran-type orogeny. The metamorphic belts are regarded essentially as a deep-seated portion of an accretionary complex. In spite of continuous subduction of oceanic plates beneath the continents, these orogenic rocks were formed quite episodically, as evidenced by discontinuous matrix ages of the accretionary complexes and a striking concentration of isotopic ages of the granitoids. A systematic along-arc age shift of Cretaceous large-scaled granitic magmatism and regional metamorphism suggests a tectonic control such as ridge subduction, which triggered the episodic orogeny. A tectonic model based on the paired metamorphic belts, combined with the non-steady tectonic control, works well to explain this magmatism and metamorphism in a single arc-trench system as a continental margin process. However, the juxtapositional process of the paired metamorphic belts is still a problem. Two possible cases, namely transcurrent displacement and back-arc overthrusting are discussed.
