Notes: Inelastic electron tunneling experiments have been performed in Bi0.94Sb0.06–Al oxide-Al junctions. A strong peak observed at 1.9 mV in the second derivative tunnel spectra is closely related to the estimated effective Debye temperature, besides intervalley acoustic and optical phonon structures. This structure clearly corresponds to the electron–intravalley acoustic phonon coupling. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Hall coefficient, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient of n-type specimens of β-Ag2Se, the low temperature polymorph of silver selenide, were measured over the temperature range from 70 to 300 K. The results showed maxima in both Hall coefficient and the electrical resistivity just below the onset of the intrinsic conduction range. This anomaly was qualitatively explained by the deviation of the Coulomb scattering from the usual assumption of independence due to the degenerate nature of the samples. The estimated energy gap for different samples of about 160 meV seems to confirm the existence of the second low temperature phase β2. This second phase is a probable reason for the relatively high thermoelectric figure of merit observed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electron tunneling experiments were performed on p-Co1−xFexSb3–Al-oxide–Al junctions for x=0 and x=0.1 at 4.2 K. A U-shaped tunneling conductance curve obtained for polycrystalline p-CoSb3 clearly shows an energy-band gap of ∼50 meV. For p-Co0.9Fe0.1Sb3 skutterudites, a strong zero-bias conductance anomaly is observed. This anomaly may be due to a structural disorder arising from defects such as vacancies and interstitial Fe atoms. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Inelastic electron tunneling experiments have been performed in p-Bi2Te3–Al oxide-Al junctions. Strong peaks due to electron-acoustic phonon coupling are observed in the second derivative tunnel spectrum. These phonon structures are closely related to the effective Debye temperature. This gives direct evidence that the electron-acoustic phonon scattering plays a dominant role in p-Bi2Te3. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: PbSe fine powders were synthesized from a liquid-phase reaction of lead-ascorbic acid complex and sodium selenosulfate. The resultant powders were sintered up to nearly theoretical density by controlling the sintering atmosphere and by optimizing the sintering temperature and time. The highest sintered density, 99.7% relative to the theoretical density of 8.27 103 kg/m3, was attained when a powder compact was sintered at 998 K for 6 h under a flow of argon containing 3% H2 gas. Powder compacts could be sintered to higher than 98% when the sintering temperature was 1073 K or lower. When the sintering temperature or time exceeded the optimum range, considerable volatilization of the component occurred, resulting in a decrease in the sintered density. The use of a powder bed was found to be effective in suppressing the volatilization of the component.

Notes: Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Japan has been increasing dramatically. In March 1990, we assigned special doctors in infection control (infection control doctor, ICD), and defined comprehensive controls against MRSA infection. A total of 3 536 cases of digestive tract surgery performed at our department were studied during the period between September 1987 and August 1997. We changed the use of antibiotics to prevent postoperative infection. Cefazolin (CEZ) was employed for surgery of the upper digestive tract, including esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and gallbladder. Cefotiam (CTM) was employed for surgery of the lower digestive tract, liver, and pancreas. In esophageal resection, the tracheal tube was extracted during the early postoperative period, and for cervical esophagogastroanastomosis, the autosuture was changed to layer-to-layer anastomosis. We have achieved successful control of postoperative MRSA infection, the incidence having decreased to 0.3% (9/2703). In conclusion, our methods of control against postoperative MRSA infection implies that comprehensive measures of prevention, including the reviewed specification and usage of antibiotics and operation management, have been well implemented. This value is the lowest and the first of any domestic hospital or institute in Japan, suggesting a continued and significant decrease.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: Purpose of this study was to assess stent endoprosthesis for colorectal cancer (SECC) as an adjuvant to operative preparation in patients with obstructing colorectal cancers. METHODS: A self-expanding stainless steel stent was inserted in 15 patients with obstructing colorectal cancers under colonoscopic observation and fluoroscopic control. Following successful SECC, the colon was mechanically prepared using polyethylene glycol. Definitive surgical treatment then was undertaken. RESULTS: All 12 patients in whom the stent had been successfully placed recovered intestinal transit and tolerated mechanical preparation. A satisfactory preparation was confirmed during the operation. Two perforations and one dislocation were encountered. CONCLUSION: SECC is a new method for operative preparation of patients with obstructing colorectal cancers, which may reduce morbidity and mortality associated with this difficult problem.
