Notes: To understand the effects of nitrogen on high temperature, creep-rupture tests have been conducted at 973 and 1073K for 18Cr-9Ni austenitic stainless steels with 0.14 and 0.08wt% nitrogen contents. It is observed that creep-rupture life of 18Cr-9Ni-0.14N steel is longer than that of 18Cr-9Ni-0.08N steel. To verify the difference in creep-rupture life between two alloys, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy are used to observe the microstructure. From the observations, it is known that the Cr-rich carbides are precipitated mainly at the grain boundary. Comparing the ratio of the linear density of the precipitate particles, the higher nitrogen content is, the less carbide is precipitated. Nitrogen might retard the formation of carbides at the grain boundary and reduce the density of cavity sites which are one of the main grain boundary damages

Notes: Both tensile and strain controlled low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were conducted for 316Land 316LN at 550oC and 600oC to investigate the nitrogen effect on the deformation behavior oftype 316L stainless. The waveform of LCF was a symmetrical triangle with a constant strain rate of4×10-3/s was employed for most tests. It shows that the addition of nitrogen in the alloy results in anincrease in tensile strength but a decrease in ductility. Both the alloys exhibited cell structure aftersevere tensile deformation. However, after low cycle fatigue, only planar slip band is observed in316LN, whereas cell structure is still the main feather of microstructure in 316L. This is due to thestrong interstitial-substitutional Mo-N pairs and various stress strain conditions

Notes: Abstract In high-temperature and low-cycle fatigue, creep damage reduces fatigue life. In this investigation, a model for life prediction in low-cycle fatigue with hold time at tensile peak strain is suggested in the temperature region of 0.57T m. This model is based on previously reported theories for creep cavitatation and we predict the creep-fatigue life. It is proposed that the fatigue life may be predicted in terms of plastic strain range, test temperature, hold time and other parameters. An equation for life prediction is given and checked using other investigators' experimental results with various hold times. The predicted creep-fatigue lives are in good agreement with those observed experimentally for 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, CrMoV steel and 13CrMo44 steel.

Notes: Abstract The difference in the grain boundary deformation between statically and cyclically crept specimens of Al-Mg solid solution has been investigated at the temperature of 580 K and for the peak stress level of 15 to 20 M Pa. In statically crept specimens, the grain boundaries deform irregularly and no crack is formed either at the triple point or along the serrated boundaries. However, in cyclically crept specimens, where the stress frequency, stress amplitude and the ratio of on-load to off-load time are 3 cycles per minute, 90% of maximum peak stress and less than 1, respectively, the grain boundaries remain smooth and wedge-type cracks are formed at the triple points, which results in intercrystalline fracture. On the basis of the experimental observations it is believed that cyclic stressing enhances grain boundary sliding through an accelerated recovery with the help of mechanically generated excess vacancies during cycling. However, due to the constraints of the grain alignment, boundary sliding becomes very difficult and creates an intercrystalline fracture at a triple point. On the other hand, under static stress, since the grain boundary is serrated to decrease the stress concentration at a triple point, a crack hardly forms at the triple point.

Notes: Abstract The effect of strain rate on the behaviour of high temperature low-cycle fatigue is investigated for AISI 304L stainless steel. Regardless of the test temperature of 873 or 973 K, the fatigue life is saturated in the strain-rate range of slower than 4 × 10−3 sec−1. Also it is interesting to note that serrated flow, which is evidence of the occurrence of dynamic strain ageing, is clearly observed in the load-elongation hysteresis loops for strain rates that are slower (at 873 K) and faster (at 973 K) than 4 × 10−3 sec−1. Since the combination of temperature and strain rate is concerned with the phenomenon of dynamic strain ageing, it is considered that the above-mentioned saturated fatigue life at 873 K is caused by dynamic strain ageing and that the hardening effect due to dynamic strain ageing abnormally increases the fatigue life. However, even though the behaviour of fatigue life under strain rates slower than 4 × 10−3 sec−1 at 973 K has nothing to do with the dynamic strain ageing, it has been found that the failure life is also saturated in this slower strain-rate range. This behaviour is considered to be caused by the effect of creep, because the deformation under the low strain-rate activates the recovery process and as a result it causes saturation of the inelastic strain range.

Notes: Abstract The phenomenon of cyclic creep acceleration (CCA) is well known. Also, it has been observed experimentally that there exists a peak stress level above which CCA begins to occur. For copper the value of this peak stress is known to be independent of cyclic stress conditions such as stress amplitude and frequency. This stress level or the threshold stress was observed to increase with temperature in the range 0.4 to 0.5T m. A model is suggested to predict the threshold stress level and to explain the temperature dependence of the stress. This model is based on the dislocation core diffusion process by the athermally generated excess vacancies. The concept of critical length of dislocation core is used for core diffusion fast enough to enhance dislocation climb. This critical length is expressed as a function of stress and temperature. From these concepts, the threshold stress is expressed asτ/G - A exp (-ΔQ/RT). The experimentally observed values of the threshold stress are in good agreement with this model, and the temperature dependence is also experimentally proved.

Notes: Abstract The effects of impurities on creep cavitation characteristics in type 304 stainless steels with and without additions of sulphur and/or phosphorus have been studied using four experimental heats. Over a limited range of stress at 1000 K, the change in size distribution of creep cavities and carbide precipitates, and the level of impurity segregation with the amount of addition have been investigated. It is found that phosphorus accelerates the nucleation of creep cavities, but retards the growth of them. However, sulphur had little effect on both nucleation and growth of the cavities. It has also been found that ageing prior to testing inhibits creep cavitation. The effects of impurities on cavitation are analysed and discussed from the viewpoint of the change in the segregation of impurities and the precipitation of carbides due to impurity additions.
