    Notes: Bacterial photosynthetic antenna complexes are composed of α-helical hydrophobicpolypeptides and pigments (e.g., bacteriochlorophyll a). We report here self-assembling properties ofan engineered hydrophobic polypeptide with zinc-substituted bacteriochlorophyll a ([Zn]-BChl a) invarious lipid bilayer to investigate the effect of lipid species on the self-assembling properties. Whenthe polypeptide and [Zn]-BChl a were mixed in surfactant solution (n-octyl β-D-glucopyranoside:OG) at 25°C, the absorption band [Zn]-BChl a was red-shifted from 770 to 812 nm, that is assignableto quasi-dimeric “subunit-type” complex. By subsequent dilution and cooling of the solution, theabsorption band further red-shifted to 836 nm indicative for progressed assembly, ‘LH1-type’complex. When the subunit-type complex was assembled in lipid bilayer, e.g., phosphatidylcholines(PC’s) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG’s), the assembling property to form LH1-type complexprominently depended on the character of their fatty acid chains in the phospholipids. The subunitcomplex remained in the fluidic bilayers, but further assembled to form LH1-type complex insolid-like phospholipid bilayers, suggesting that intermolecular force of phospholipid governs theassembling of the polypeptide/[Zn]-BChl a complex

    Notes: Abstract  Effects of urea on transport phenomena of sulfonated azo dyes with different aggregation constants into water-swollen cellulose membrane have been studied at 25–55 °C. The results were analyzed on the basis of a parallel transport theory of surface and pore diffusion. Addition of urea decreased equilibrium adsorption of the dyes onto cellulose and increased the surface and pore diffusivities for the parallel diffusion model of the dye with high aggreg-ation constant. Temperature dependence of the effects was also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  The effect of denaturants such as urea and normal alcohols on the formation of light-harvesting (LH) polypeptides/bacteriochlorophyll a (BChla) complex (LH1 complex) in n-octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (OG) micelle was examined to provide an insight into stability of the complex. The stabilities of the LH1 complex in OG micelle and of the complex in the chromatophore of photosynthetic bacteria were compared by addition of denaturants. The extent of stability of these complexes was monitored by the change in absorbance of Qy band of BChla in these complexes, resulting generally in the blue-shifting of the Qy band from near 870 nm to about 777 nm upon addition of these denaturants. Urea and guanidium hydrochloride (Gnd) showed a relatively weak denaturing effect. Normal alcohols showed stronger denaturing effect, depending on the hydrophobicity of the alcohols. These results imply that the stability of LH1 complex in OG micelle can be largely attributed to the hydrophobic interactions in the complex as well as that of the complex in the chromatophore of photosynthetic bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of illumination on transport of sulfonated bisazo direct dyes, CI Direct Yellow 12, and CI Direct Yellow 4, into a cellulose membrane has been studied at various temperatures. Transport of CI Direct Yellow 12, which exhibits photoinduced reversible trans-cis isomerism in aqueous solution into a cellulose membrane, was influenced by illumination. It is likely that the transport was influenced by transisomerization of the photoisomeric dye and the diffusivity was controlled by surface diffusion rather than by pore diffusion under both light and dark conditions.

    Notes: Dyeing of cellulose by direct dye in aqueous sodium alginate solutions containing sodium chloride has been studied to interpret thermodynamically the role of sodium alginate on the adsorption equilibrium of dye on cotton. The result has been compared with that of sodium chloride (low-molecular inorganic electrolyte) by an adsorption model on cellulose. We have inferred, by the membrane-equilibrium theory, that the dye has been concetrated into the internal solution of cellulose because of the presence of sodium alginate in the bulk solution.

    Notes: Thiazolium salt polymers synthesized by quaternization of 4-(4′-vinylphenyl)thiazole (VPT) polymers with methyl iodide had a highly catalytic activity for “the formose reaction.” Their catalytic activities were comparable to that of a low molecular weight analog, 3-methyl-4-phenylthiazolium iodide (MPTI). In the reaction catalyzed by the polymer catalyst, a main product, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), was detected by gas-liquid chromatography. The polymer catalysts were easily recovered from the reaction mixture and reused with a sustained catalytic activity. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We characterized three low-molecular-weight thiazolium salt analogues: N-methyl-5-(2′-benzyloxyethyl)-4-methylthiazolium iodide (MBMTI), N-methyl-4-phenylthiazolium iodide (MPTI), and N-methylbenzothiazolium iodide (MBTI). MBMTI, having high-electron density on the thiezolium ring, was found to be a durable thiazolium salt in buffer solution. Then, the polymer-supported thiazolium salt catalyst having MBMTI structure as a catalytic site for acyloin condensation was prepared by the polymerization of the corresponding thiazole monomer and the following quaternization. The polymer catalyst had excellent catalytic activity even in buffer solution, while the corresponding low molecular weight catalyst did not show any activity in aqueous system. Furthermore, the durable polymer catalyst could be reused under the aqueous condition. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
