Notes: [Auszug] The dissolution kinetics of synthetic hydroxyapatite do not seem to have been studied previously in detail. Single crystal studies are not yet feasible because large hydroxyapatite crystals cannot be readily prepared5, if at all. Data obtained on slurry systems would be complicated by the ...

Notes: Abstract Experimental studies of the coil-to-globule transitions exhibited in better than θ-solvents by interfacial copolymers ofN-isopropylacrylamide and acrylamide imply that a lower bound for the value of ‘n’ in then-clusters of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) is 3. The corresponding upper bound is therefore likely to be 5 or 6. Statistical copolymers of PNIPAM containing upwards of 0.75 mole fraction of acrylamide (whose homopolymer does not itself displayn-clustering) exhibited this transition, which disappeared at higher mole fractions of acrylamide. Interfacial homopolymers ofN-ethylacrylamide and its statistical copolymers withN-isopropylacrylamide exhibitedn-clustering at all compositions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Theorie des anomalen Streueffekts von Würfeln wird betrachtet.
Notes: Summary The anomalous diffraction theory of cubes is considered. Three orientations, face, edge and corner incidence, are presented and the respective total scattering coefficients derived. An approximate expression for the average total scattering coefficient of an array of cubes, oriented randomly within the scattering volume, is formulated from these orientations. The range of the positions of the first primary maximum and minimum in the total scattering coefficient curves are expected to hold for values of the relative refractive index as large as 2.

Notes: [Auszug] We now report that even low molecular weight non-ionic polymer molecules (Mv^103 to 104) are able to flocculate some polymer latices. They also seem to function by a bridging mechanism but require the presence at the particle surfaces of suitable groups with which the flocculant can interact ...

Notes: Summary A theory of steric stabilization is developed that is essentially an extension ofFischer's solvency theory. It treats both interpenetration and compression using a latice approach. This permits the introduction of segment density distribution functions. One virtue of the new theory is that it is in good qualitative agreement with the results of experiment. Some limitations of the theory are also noted.

Notes: Summary A comparison is presented between the qualitative predictions of the various theories of steric stabilization with the results of experiments. It is shown that with the notable exception ofFischer's solvency theory, all of the theories advanced to-date are at odds with results of experiments. Possible reasons for these discrepancies are discussed.

Notes: Summary It is shown how it is possible to use the Flory network theory to develop simple analytic formulae for the elastic contribution (first proposed byJäckel) to the steric stabilization by macromolecules. Constant segment density and gaussian segment density distribution models are discussed. It seems likely that the elastic contribution is negligible in the interpenetration domain but becomes important as significant compression occurs. Incipient flocculation is inferred to occur in a pseudo-secondary minimum, the depth of which is almost independent of any elastic contribution.

Notes: Summary The stabilization of colloidal particles by nonionic polymers that exhibit loopy adsorption is considered in terms of an exponentially decaying segment density distribution function. It is shown that the steric interaction, whether repulsive or attractive, in the interpenetrational domain is drastically reduced for an exponential function, compared with that for a constant or a Gaussian distribution function. This reduction originates in the small segment densities that occur in the outer regions of steric layers exhibiting loopy adsorption. The net effect is that incipient instability in such systems can only be generated by significant penetration into the worse than 8-solvent domain. Any correlation between the critical flocculation point and the θ-point is thus weakened and stable dispersions can be prepared in worse than θ-solvents for the stabilizing chains in free solution. Both phenomena have been observed experimentally. It is predicted that, in general, the penetration into the worse than B-solvent domain will be greater for nonaqueous than for aqueous dispersion media. The conformational effects are reinforced by any changes in the thermodynamic parameters due to loopy adsorption.

Notes: Summary Monte Carlo calculations have demonstrated empirically the slow convergence of the characteristic ratio (C n ) of linear polymer tails. Analytical expressions are derived for bothC n and thex-component of the persistence vector for random flight chains attached to an inert interface. These show that whereasC n for the chain in free solution converges instantaneously, the characteristic ratio of the attached chain is only a slowly converging function. The analytical predictions are in good agreement with the Monte Carlo results on the same model. It is also shown that the x-component of the persistence vector is divergent, increasing as the square root of the number of bonds. The implications of these results for real chains attached to an interface are discussed.
