Notes: Abstract Solid rubbers have been incorporated into thermosets using the compositional quenching process. Electron micrographs reveal that rubber particles a few micrometres or less in size have been dispersed in the matrix. Two model systems were studied: an epoxy resin cured with primary amines which represents a tight network structure, and a phenoxy resin cross-linked with methylene diisocyanate which represents a loose network. The present study indicates that a small amount of a cross-linking agent can reduce the degree of matrix yielding with a resultant drop in impact strength. SEM fractography provides complementary information on the transition from ductile fracture to brittle fracture.

Notes: Abstract The role of adhesion in rubber modified polymers was determined using finite element stress analysis. Adhesion between the two phases was found to be unimportant in terms of the stress concentrations in the matrix phase, even near the polymer-rubber interface. By considering zero adhesion and perfect adhesion limits, bounds on the interfacial behavior have been established. The stress analysis predicts elastic properties such as modulus, Poisson's ratio and yield strength. A comparison is made to experimental results on a thermoplastic/elastomer blend.

Notes: Motionless mixers are well suited to augment heat transfer and to provide a uniform thermal environment in laminar flow reactors. Heat transfer performance can be characterized with the Nusselt number, while the degree of thermal homogeneity can be characterized using the thermal time distribution which is the nonisothermal analogue of the residence time distribution. Theoretical results, calculations, and design strategies are presented for a variety of mixer types including flow inverters as well as the more common flow dividers. Two-channel, partial flow inversion is an excellent, near optimal, strategy for cooling or other situations such as polymerizations which give elongated velocity profiles. For flattened velocity profiles, perfect mixing can sometimes give better results. In practice, however, partial inverters can be expected to outperform those motionless mixers which are primarily flow dividers.

Notes: Existing models for laminar flow in tubular reactors neglect radial velocities in the momentum transport equation. The axial velocity distribution is calculated assuming fully developed flow wherein axial velocities are in local equilibrium with the radial viscosity profile. A test of this assumption has been devised using a representative model of the Newtonian viscosity, μ(r, z), and by reconstructing the radial velocity components using the continuity equation. The assumption of fully developed flow is shown to be a valid approximation for typical polymerization reactions. However, the fact that radial velocities are negligible with respect to momentum transport does not mean they are negligible with respect to convective diffusion of heat and mass. Radial convection is shown to be important for typical polymerization and heat transfer examples.
